A New Look At Jerry Garcia Pre-Dead Years With 4CD Before The Dead Set

There are few individuals who have helmed some of Rock’s legendary band incarnations that garner as much intense visitation as Jerry Garcia has received. The Grateful Dead is today revered as one of the great Rock bands in the history of the style. And so it’s without surprise that given the intensity that Garcia visited upon his search for great music, there are still albums being introduced that bear his involvement.

On May 11, Caroline Records will release a 4CD collection of early, pre-Grateful Dead music assembled from wherever they were recorded. This Jerry Garcia – Before The Dead box will contain 84 songs that find Jerry Garcia exploring Folk music in a variety of venues including a birthday party.

With this set, one would be able to fit within the musical soul of Garcia and sense his evolution to what would become one of Rock’s greatest stories.

As an extra note: there are two Grateful Dead packages readying for release. The first is from Real Gone Music and is called Grateful Dead: Road Trips, Vol. 4 , No. 2 April Fools’ ’88, which is scheduled for June 1.

The other is a 140g-weight black vinyl 5LP reproduction of Cornell 5/8/77 slated for reissue on May 8 (date-released as a sort of respect and celebration of the historic date itself).

2CD 50th Anniversary Deluxe Edition Of The Grateful Dead Arrives In January

grateful-dead-50th-2cdThe Grateful Dead has left behind a legacy of awe and respect. The band enjoyed three distinct periods of popularity: their emergence and their Warner Brothers years and their UA-distributed Grateful Dead Records years, their Arista Records years, and the years that followed their official recordings (their last was Built To Last back in 1989). But their fan-base is still as rabid as ever. Plus, they continue to gain new fans.

The band formed in the middle ’60s. Their first album for Warner Records was their self-titled classic, released in 1967. And in 2017, that album will be fifty years old!

On January 13, Grateful Dead Productions will recognize that 50th Anniversary with a newly remastered Deluxe Edition of The Grateful Dead. In addition to already welcomed news, the release will add in another CD that contains the previously unreleased FULL show of their July 29, 1966 set at the P.N.E. Garden Auditorium in Vancouver, BC, Canada, and as another bonus, will include four live performance tracks from the subsequent evening at the same venue.

This 50th Anniversary Deluxe Edition will also be released on vinyl LP as a picture disc. It will be limited to a run of only 10,000 copies.

Good news, indeed, Deadheads!

Mickey Hart’s 1991 Classic, Planet Drum, Gets 25th Anniversary Reissue

mickey-hart-planet-drum-25th-anniversaryFans of The Grateful Dead are really in a class by themselves. They celebrate all things of any facet of The Dead. And while music developed, recorded, and released by The Grateful Dead reign supreme on any meter, it goes without saying that released music from the band members are on a par not too far removed from the band itself.

Mickey Hart, one of two of the band’s original drummers (Bill Kreuzmann is the other), played with the band for two periods with only a brief hiatus between he two. Over time, Hart has released a series of albums that include Planet Drum. Planet Drum was originally released in 1991 and subsequently went on to win a Grammy Award for Best World Music Album.

On December 2, UMe will reissue Planet Drum on a wide scale with planned reissues on CD, DD, and vinyl LP. The reason for this reissue is that this is the album’s 25th Anniversary. With this reissue, there will be three new tracks (“Sea Of Showers”, “Throat Games”, and “The Spot”).

As an aside, Mickey Hart, with his new affiliation with UMe/Verve, will be releasing a brand new album sometime in 2017. In addition, the catalog of Hart will be brought into the Verve household, which may result in a reissue to get the label brand on the CDs.
