TAPSheet: Release Notes – April 4, 2017

With a ton of things coming out, I thought it time for a broader TAPSheet edition, a rarity these days. It was once a concept that dominated my posts and actually was the basis for my first entry into the internet station in 2001. Hard to believe that MusicTAP has been around since 2001 but there you have it. In any case, here we go:

On June 16, Nonesuch Records plan the release of new Fleet Foxes music with the CD, DD. and vinyl LP issues of Crack-Up, the band’s third. This album will contain eleven new songs, one of which can be sampled at the pre-order point. The band will tour this album.

If you’re like me, labels can sometimes provide a hefty influence simply because of the music they support. We saw a lot of that in the ’80s, and ’90s, with labels like 4AD, whose concentrations were on a special kind of music style. One such label that I follow consistently is Dead Oceans. One of their artists, Kevin Morby, will have a new album on shelves on June 16. The album is called City Music. This is Morby’s fourth album. You may remember Kevin Morby from his previous band, the folk-like Woods. Woods still creates beautifully (so investigate them)!

The Secret Sisters can be likened a bit to First Aid Kit. Their brand of music is not too far removed. Not to mention their music and songs are mesmerizing. Currently, they have two albums out. Their last is Put Your Needle Down, released in 2014. I find that album to be excellent and quite listenable. On June 9, New West will release the next album, You Don’t Own Me Anymore.

Cigarettes After Sex is a sweet blend of smoky ambient music with dark lyrics, atmospheric guitars, and sexy whispering vocals. Their first album, the eponymous Cigarettes After Sex, will be on the calendar for June 9, CD, DD, and vinyl LP. For a real trip, listen (below) to their DARK cover of REO Speedwagon’s “Keep On Lovin’ You”. Not so sweet and Pop now, is it!

Omnivore Records will release a fifteen track retrospective of Robert Lamm of Chicago fame. With a strong collection of solo albums, this retrospective has plenty of sources to draw from. Several of the cool things to be found in this set are five live remixes that include a version of Chicago’s “Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?”, plus a previously unissued “Sunny”. The new set is called Time Chill: A Retrospective, and is scheduled for release on June 2.

Time/Life will release two Various Artists boxes on June 2. The first is The British Invasion, an 8CD/1DVD collection, and The Sock Hop Collection, an 8CD set. That’s a nice stream of music.

Atlantic Records will provide two format versions of their collected hits, 40 – (Hits From 40 Years 1977-2017) 2LP vinyl set for Foreigner. The set is planned for May 19 for the 2CD version, and June 2 for the 2LP vinyl set.

Real Gone Music has an expanded edition of Full Moon, the 1973 collaboration between Kris Kristofferson and Rita Coolidge. This edition will supply six bonus tracks, one a Kris & Rita tune (“Hobo’s Lullaby”), and the rest, Rita Coolidge solo songs. Our dear friend, Joe Marchese supplies the essay within. It’s on the calendar for June 2.

Two Fleetwood Mac remasters will be delivered on vinyl LP on May 26. Those are Mirage, and Tango In The Night. Their CD counterparts are in release.

Varese Sarabande will release The Very Best Of The Beau Brummels: The Complete Singles on CD, with a release date set for May 19.

Varese Sarabande will also issue The Very Best of Peter Cetera on CD scheduled for May 19.

Geffen Records have HD digital coming for After The Rain by Nelson. The 2017 remaster will be issued as 96kHz/24-bit and 192 kHz/24-bit offerings. The release date for these is April 21.

Capitol Records will reissue We’re An American Band on vinyl LP with a release date of May 19 for the Grand Funk Railroad classic. the label also has vinyl LP scheduled for Heart Like A Wheel by Linda Ronstadt, and Get The Knack by The Knack.

TAPSheet: Release Notes – 10/01/15

Beggars Banquet plan the reissue of three classic Gary Numan titles on vinyl LP which will include The Pleasure Principle (1979), Telekon (2LP, 1980), and Replicas (with Tubeway Army, 1979). These three vinyl reissues will be released on December 11.

Mute Records have Saturdays=Youth (2008) , and Digital Shades, Volume 1 (2007), by M83, on reissued CD, planned for November 20.

Provogue Records plan a CD and LP offering for a new Leslie West set, Soundcheck. Soundcheck is the newest album from the celebrated guitarist that will contain eleven tracks. Exciting is the fact that there are big contributors to this new West album that include Peter Frampton, Brian May, Bonnie Bramlett, and the late Jack Bruce. Soundcheck is scheduled for November 20.

Leslie West Soundcheck

Eagle Rock Entertainment will release a Blu-ray edition of A Night At The Odeon featuring Queen. This BD set goes to shelves on November 20.

Eagle Rock Entertainment also has several other good offerings that include 2CD/BD, and 2CD/DVD editions of Live In Hyde Park featuring The Who, and 2CD/BD and 2CD/DVD editions of From The Vault: Live At Leeds 1982 featuring The Rolling Stones, (see how they did that? Leeds a well known Who title now affixed to The Stones, and Hyde, once attached to The Stones, now a Who set). All sets are pegged for release on November 20.

UDR will release Guilty As Sin by Girlschool on CD and vinyl LP, both on November 13. Nice to hear these UK girls once again.

Girlschool Guilty As Sin

4AD Records will release the new album by Daughter. The new album, called Not To Disappear, is planned for January 15, 2016. The album is being preceded by a single, “Doing The Right Thing” (see video below). The new album will offer ten tracks!

And finally, Legacy Recordings will release a 4CD, 97-track collection of newly remastered radio broadcast and rehearsal pieces featuring Frank Sinatra in a package called Frank Sinatra: A Voice On Air  1935-1955. It is expected on November 20.

TAPSheet: Vinyl Release Notes – 05/05/2015

Vinyl reissues continue to be the upsurge in new releases. Even if there are no expectations laid out for a CD update of any given title, it seems that a vinyl issue can be had regardless. (Do NOT take bad heart, CD fans, it’s just hard to ignore the cool titles coming to vinyl these days.) And so:

On July 17, Rhino and Parlophone will meet to re-release three great titles that include Vienna (1980) by Ultravox, Space Ritual (1973) by Hawkwind, and Room To Roam (1990) by The Waterboys. All LPs are cut at the 180g weight. Space Ritual will be a 2LP set.

Ultravox Vienna

Curb Records will re-release the soundtrack to the Peter Fonda/Susan Strasberg film from 1968, The Trip, which contained music from The Electric Flag. It’s scheduled for July 10. This issue will contain a download card for the digital files, as well as an insert.

Electric Flag The Trip ST

On June 23, Friday Music will surprise us with a remastered LP of Mr Tambourine Man by The Byrds. It joins their previously reissued vinyl sets for Turn! Turn! Turn!, The Byrds’ Greatest Hits, and The Ballad Of Easy Rider. And like those previous LP reissues, Mr Tambourine Man will be pressed on 180g-weight vinyl. The real cool thing about this one i that it will be issued on clear vinyl.

Byrds Mr Tambourine Man

Friday Music will also reissue a remastered LP set for Heathen, the 2002 David Bowie release. In addition to the usual 180-weight vinyl, the title will be pressed on translucent blue vinyl, and will be housed in a tri-fold jacket. It is set for release on June 23.

David Bowie Heathen

And, as if that wasn’t enough goodness from Friday Music, they plan a reissue of Chicago Transit Authority (1969) by Chicago, scheduling for the same busy June 23 issue date.

On June 16, Partisan Records will release an “Indie Exclusive” issue of the upcoming Restless Ones by Heartless Bastards. It is restricted to only 1000 copies worldwide. My guess is that this will sport only the Partisan Records label without any indication of a Warner Music afiliation. Needless to say, if that is what you want, there will only be 1000. And while that may sound like a lot, you have to remember that Heartless Bastards is now a big name as a band.

Heartless Bastards Restless Ones

One of my all-time favorite sound tracks is One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest by Jack Nitzsche. The re-released vinyl is coming from its original label, Fantasy Records, planned for June 23.

TAPSheet: Release Notes – 10/16/2014 (US Report)

The strangest set being prepped for distribution is the upcoming 4CD Box featuring Joni Mitchell. In this set, Joni Mitchell has arranged her classic tracks in a series of four ballets heard over the four CDs. Joni has purposefully aligned the tracks in such a way as to create art in its own way. I will admit to this being a different way to present original music, to take classic tracks, and make a story with them. The CDs are packaged into a book with lyrics, photos, six new paintings, and new notes by Joni Mitchell herself. All of the songs are newly remastered. However, looking at it however you wish, Love Has Many Faces: A Quartet, A Ballet, Waiting To Be Danced, will be released on November 17 via Rhino Records. (Joni, how about a new album instead?)

Joni Mitchell Love Has Many Faces

The new Neil Young album, Storytone, will be released on November 4 on both CD, and 2CD Deluxe Editions. If you’re all about vinyl, then wait until December 16 to get a 2LP, 180g-weight vinyl set.

4AD Records will release a Pixies collection, Doolittle 25: B-sides, Peel Sessions, and Demos, on both CD, and LP, on December 2.

RCA Records will issue a ‘best of’ for Gavin Degraw on Finest Hour: The Best Of Gavin Degraw, on October 21.

On November 17, Rhino will assemble the accumulated Warner Bros albums by Faces alumni, Rod Stewart, who had his own album to do. The set, The Studio Albums 1975-2001, will be a 14CD Box containing:

We don’t hear much from Elvin Bishop, but I’m always pleased when we do. Most know him as the ‘one hit wonder’, when, in fact, Elvin Bishop is much more than that. (You might remember “Fooled Around And Fell In Love”, which had Mickey Thomas (Jefferson Starship) at the vocal helm.) Elvin bishop has a rich musical history that would do you well to investigate. His last album, Red Dog Speaks (2010), was a good album.

Adding to the original four CDs, a fifth CD will feature previously available digital bonus tracks.  The DVD features Suzanne Vega in a concert setting at The City Winery in New York City, as well as an interview, and a rehearsal for the show featured.
