UK’s Esoteric Records To Reissue GTR Album

GTR low_WEBGTR, a band formed by Steve Howe, and Steve Hackett back in 1985, didn’t have much of a life other than to provide fans of Progressive Rock with a single album. The band’s 1986 self-titled debut showed promise with decent charting in both the US, and the UK. It sold to Gold status , giving the band a sense of hope and acceptance. GTR was received with various levels of appreciation. Their decided non-use of keyboards in the framework of their music was one that intrigued fans, and alienated others. Despite the attempts to keep it at the forefront of several agendas, GTR faltered, and the band dissolved.

Their only album is being revisited by UK reissue label, Esoteric Records. The label will remaster the album, and expand it with an additional CD of material that highlights the band’s live setting with a 1986 set from LA. The live CD will feature fourteen performance tracks. Further, the 2CD Deluxe Edition will offer three bonus tracks that include a special 12″ GTR Mix of “The Hunter”, the single edit of “When The Heart Rules The Mind”, and a single edit of “The Hunter”. Also, there will be a booklet that restores artwork and content, as well as providing a new essay on the band.

Sounds like a good deal to me.

2CD Steve Howe Anthology Expected In March (US), April (UK)

Steve Howe AnthologyWhen you see the name Steve Howe, you are reminded of not only the years spent with YES, but also of the years in Asia, in GTR, and in the collective known as Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman, Howe. When you look at all of those years on a musical scale, it’s tipped pretty well in favor of greatness. When Steve Howe was called upon to replace the departing Peter Banks. That replacement proved to be an extraordinary one. In addition to all of these collective efforts, there are a number of brilliant solo efforts by the master. A brief look at those place a number near 25 including live sets, and other collaborative pieces, (19 studio works in all).

But you didn’t come here for history on one of the more notable guitarists in Rock and Roll history. You’re here because there is an upcoming 2CD Anthology of Steve Howe music, much of it newly remastered.

On March 10 (US), April 7 (UK), Rhino Records will release a 2CD Anthology featuring Steve Howe solo works outside the borders of his various band involvements. the collection, called Anthology: A Solo Career Retrospective. This set will provide 34 tracks in all, many of them receiving a new 2015 remaster (see track-list below). Asia To Release New Studio Effort, Gravitas, In March

AsiaGravitasAsia broke in to loud thunder with the release of their supergroup-fueled self-titled debut that generated “Heat Of The Moment” (offered to Wishbone Ash when Wetton was a member of that band for their Number The Brave album. It was rejected).  The other song, “Only Time Will Tell” helped to lead the band to the upper reaches of the Billboard charts back in 1982.

Asia consisted of John Wetton, a King Crimson alumnus, Steve Howe (YES), Carl Palmer (ELP), and Geoff Downes (Buggles/YES).  And over the next album (Alpha – 1983), remained intact.  For Astra, the band’s 1985 album, Steve Howe had left, replaced by Mandy Meyer. Over the years, Asia would be joined and rejoined by members of the classic lineup, and other musicians to replace their departures.  In 2008, the Mark I lineup would rejoin for the appropriately titled Phoenix album. For the two following albums (Omega – 2010, XXX – 2012), Howe, Downes (who manned the helm throughout), Palmer, and Wetton remained.

Asia will release their new album, Gravitas, on March 25.  However, once again, they will be whisked back to the happenstance of the band’s third album, as Steve Howe officially retired from the band, thus concentrating his efforts on YES. Gravitas will introduce Sam Coulson on guitars.

Gravitas will be released on both CD, and a CD/DVD Deluxe Edition via Frontiers Records.  The DVD will include a ‘Making Of’ documentary as well as two videos (“Valkyrie” – Video, “Heat Of The Moment” – Live). The Cd will tag on two bonus tracks with acoustic versions of the album’s “The Closer I Get To You”, and “Joe Di Maggio’s Glove”.
