Rory Gallagher Albums Remastered For CD and LP

One of the most criminally underrated guitarists is Rory Gallagher. With a career that started with Taste, Gallagher soon was solo after a breakup left him little choice. His first album was self-titled and released in 1971. Over the course of his short life span (he succumbed to liver organ failure a the age of 47 in 1995), he left a wonderful string of eleven solo albums and four live albums. It has been said that Gallagher was the requested replacement for Mick Taylor after Taylor left The Stones. Of course, that enviable position went to Ron Wood.

On March 16, Universal UK will reissue select Rory Gallagher studio and live albums on both CD and vinyl LP. These are not Anniversary sets nor are they Special Editions. There will be no bonus tracks. They are remastered, I’m sure, for vinyl reissue but will be made available on bare bones CD sets. These will include:

  • Rory Gallagher (1971)
  • Tattoo (1973)
  • Calling Card (1976)
  • Defender (1987)
  • Irish Tour ’74 (1974) CD only
  • Against The Grain (1975)
  • Live! in Europe (1972)
  • Photo Finish (1978)
  • BBC Sessions (1999) CD Only
  • Deuce (1971)
  • Top Priority (1979)
  • Notes From San Francisco (2011, Posthumous)
  • Stage Struck – Recorded Live (1980)

Previously, the first six Rory Gallagher albums were released as 40th Anniversary remasters in 2012.

Brilliant Irish Tour ’74 From Rory Gallagher Gets Expanded, Remastered For October

Gallagher Irish Tour 74Not all great guitarists are/were named Jimi Hendrix, Eddie Van Halen, Jimmy Page, and Jeff Beck. While those are just a few names that easily pop into the mind when thinking of great, innovative guitarists, they are by no means the only ones.  In fact, there are many that have so little coverage that when mentioned in casual conversation, it’s usually countered with a blank stare along with a “who?”.

Of course, all of those guitarists that are usually not known as well as the obvious ones have a serious cult following, perhaps even more intensely revered. One of those names belong to Rory Gallagher. And while Rory Gallagher is no longer with us (he died at 47 due to liver issues), his guitar playing, his studio albums, and his incendiary performances have long stayed with us.

Amid the many studio gems Rory has released via the several labels he was signed to (Polydor, Chrysalis, etc), there is his 1974 live album called Irish Tour ’74. That set, with its original nine tracks over two LPs, featured the fiery guitarist in his natural habitat, the concert stage. The event was his run-through tour of Ireland.

On October 20, that album will be receiving some serious love by not only Legacy Recordings, but also Eagle Rock Entertainment with expansive content, and reissue.

Legacy Recordings will be observing the album’s 40th Anniversary with the massive, MASSIVE, release of Irish Tour ’74 as a Special Deluxe Edition containing seven CDs , and one DVD (NTSC – Region-free) of the show, inside a 10″ boxset covering three nights of this stop. Not only will the audio be remastered, but there will be 43 previously unreleased tracks (see track list below), along with a  booklet filed with photos, new liner notes, memorabilia, and other cool things regarding the shows, the recordings, and the man!

You’re welcome, Gallagher fans, and those that should be.

Unique Rory Gallagher Collection, Kickback City

Kickback City CoverRory Gallagher was a crime novel reader.  I didn’t know that, and I’m betting neither did you.  However rock artists, when traveling, waiting for soundchecks (seen a lot of this reading going on when I promoted concerts back in my younger days), or in-between whatever else rock artists are expected to do, have a tendency to read to fill in those moments. For Rory Gallagher, that was crime novels.

Eagle Rock Entertainment is creating a unique collection of Gallagher tracks suggested by Rory’s brother, Donal.  Donal Gallagher was the one who came up with the idea of fusing collected Rory’s Gallagher’s crime-inspired songs with a new crime story, which eventually was written by Ian Rankin.  The story is written incorporating many elements found in the lyrics of the collected tracks.  The 44-page novella (The Lie Factory) is graphically illustrated by Timothy Truman of DC Comics/First Comics fame.

The set is entitled Kickback City and will include an extra CD with the novella read by actor Aidan Quinn.  But after this, it’s all about the music.  There will be two CDs filled with familiar Gallagher songs (see track-list below).

The set will be packaged as a hardbound book with the three CDs found within.  To round out Kickback City, there will be a set of four crime-scene postcards.  What enhances this set will be the addition of seven live tracks (on the second CD, and called Kickback City Live) from performances at the Cork Opera House, all of which have been previously unreleased.
