Hilary Hahn With 2CD/2LP Retrospective

Hilary Hahn is an American violinist whose craft is in the replay of classic compositions from the eras of the great classical composers. While she does do some original material, her fame is in her recitations of solo Bach pieces. Her first concert appearance was at the young age of eleven where she performed with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. To date, she has released some twenty-one sets. Her debut was Hilary Hahn Plays Bach, released in 1997. Her second was a Beethoven violin concerto (so titled), with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, which was nominated for a Grammy as Best Instrumental Soloist Performance with Orchestra back in 1999.

Photo by Michael Patrick O’Leary Retrospective is released by Deutsche Grammophon

Since her debut, Hilary Hahn has become highly recognized for her magnificent ability as a soloist, and as a chamber musician. Her rising fame is well deserved.

On January 19, a concerted effort by Deutsche Grammophon (A Decca Classics imprint), and the crowd-funding Pledge Music will produce a 2CD retrospective with seventeen tracks (see track list below). There will also be a 2LP set designed and specially mastered for the medium.

The set is called Retrospective. It will be contained within a gatefolded case and packed with a booklet containing photos, notes, and fan art.

I love that she gets this kind of attention. Her violin playing is mesmerizing.

New Ani DiFranco Album, Binary, Set for June

Long-time folk/rock/music activist singer, Ani DiFranco has eighteen studio albums to her credit since her emergence back in 1990 with the self-released debut, Ani DiFranco. Since then, she has followed up each year’s release with another the next year. Over time, she has developed a nice fan-base that keeps her active in many ways including shows throughout the world. From a  Rock and Roll standpoint, if you can make a nice living doing what you want (it doesn’t have to be extravagant), then you’re doing right by yourself. Ani DiFranco is doing right by herself.

All her music is normally funded by her label, Righteous Babe. However, with a new album on the horizon, Ani DiFranco has resorted to the rising popular methodology of Pledge Music to produce her latest.

Her newest album, Binary, is scheduled for release on June 9. It will contain eleven new songs that – in typical Ani DiFranco fashion – will relate to world and personal issues. Binary will focus on “relationships and responsibility to each other” as its message to the world.

Binary will be released on CD, DD, and 140g-weight vinyl LP.

New Gov’t Mule Album In June, Revolution Come…Revolution Go

Gov’t Mule has enjoyed a classic success for a side-project of Warren Haynes and Allen Woody, both part of Allman Brothers Band. This success replicates the success once enjoyed by Hot Tuna, also a side project experiment. (Hot Tuna was an interim project for Jack Casady and Jorma Kaukonen, both of Jefferson Airplane.) Formed in 1994, the band has released over 20 studio, live, and ‘odds ‘n ends’ sets. Since their formation, Gov’t Mule has become a classic Southern jam band with a sizable fan-base.

On June 9, Gov’t Mule will release their latest album, Revolution Come…Revolution Go. The new album will contain twelve new songs with a 2CD Deluxe Edition adding in six more tracks. the new album is being released released via Concord Records after a massive Pledge Music self-funding effort. As a matter of fact, if you go to their Pledge Music page, you’ll be inundated with a wealth of bundles and other goodies (here). Concord will distribute the music to stores  and online markets.

Revolution Come…Revolution Go will be released on CD, 2CD Deluxe Edition, DD, and vinyl 2LP.

Gov’t Mule will undertake a large Spring tour to support the new album.

Two The Beat/The English Beat Albums Are Coming

The Beat BounceIf you were into the revivalist SKA movement of the late’70s with the likes of Madness (“One Step Beyond”), The Specials (“Too Much, Too Young”), The Selecter (“Three Minute Hero”), and The Beat (“Mirror In the Bathroom”), then you no doubt enjoy Jamaican-tinged Rock and Roll. It’s always nice to have favorites from our past do new music, especially if it’s up to the standard that they set for themselves back in the day.

On September 30, The Beat (often known as The English Beat to help distinguish them from Collins’  LA band of the time, The Beat. Why, they even toured together once!), will release brand new music in their first album in over 30 years, and their first since 1982’s Special Beat Service. The new album is being called Bounce. But note that this version of The Beat features Ranking Roger as the vocalist. Ranking Roger was the band’s original vocalist. I mention this because Dave Wakeling, another original member, also has a new album arriving.

Bounce will be released on CD, DD, and vinyl LP. I assume that Here We Go Love will be issued the same way.

The two bands are being differentiated by the use of their two names of the past. Wakeling will use The English Beat. That album is currently on Pledge Music and is already a done deal with the pledges for the album at 160% of goal. Wakeling’s album is being called Here We Go Love. It doesn’t yet have an official release date. You can check the progress out here.

So, two new The Beat/The English Beat albums, both by original members. I’d say we won pretty good.
