Neil Young To Release Roxy: Tonight’s The Night Live

There were a few essential venues for live music in the ’60s and ’70s. In effect, some venues were just as notable as the band or artist that were booked into them for performances. One of them was The Roxy  located on Los Angeles’ Sunset Strip.

On April 21, Neil Young will dive into one of Rock’s most storied archives (his own) to present a 2LP edition of his September 20-22, 1973 shows at a new Roxy. The set is planned for release on Record Store Day. This set will be exclusive in that there will be an etched final side of the last LP.

A CD package, DD, and a standard, non-exclusive 2LP set (no etching) will follow on April 24.

New Neil Young Album, The Visitor, For December

Neil Young has wasted little time in bringing his next album to the strong collection of fans he has amassed over the decades since his arrival in the ’60s. Earlier, Neil Young has released his previously unreleased acoustic set from the ’70s, Hitchhiker. But hat’s material from the past and thus a curiosity. What’s he doing now?

On December 1, his longtime record label, Reprise, will release his 42nd(!) studio set (counting the curiosities). The new album is being called The Visitor. This album’s collection of ten songs were recorded with Promise of the Real band, a band he worked with on The Monsanto Years in 2015. Peace Trail followed in December of 2016. there is a song off The visitor that has been in circulation for a while, “Children of Destiny”. That song was released on YouTube in June (listen below).

Neil Young does not sleep!

The Visitor will be released on CD, DD, and vinyl 2LP. The 2LP set is scheduled for 2018, on January 5.

Neil Young’s “New” Album, Hitchhiker

This Neil Young release has been on the burner for quite awhile. Recorded in 1976, it has become legend as a “lost album”. Likely, it was more an album that wasn’t desired as a potential release back then, whereas now, such finds and re-pulls are considered money in the bank. And so this is where Hitchhiker comes in.

Hitchhiker is a collection of ten acoustic recordings of songs. If you have heard the released cut “Hitchhiker” from the album, you will recognize it for the gold it is. It is a fresh and still viable Neil Young recording songs in a setting that suits him. If released back in 1976, it may not have fared as well as it certainly will now.

Hitchhiker is a sweet acoustic version listen (as is easily determined on the released title track) as opposed to its harder-edged recording. After the listen to the acoustic version, you’ll become swiftly inebriated by its presentation. There’s no doubt in my mind that further tracks will be as sweet, especially “Powderfinger”, and “Pocahontas”.

Hitchhiker will be issued as CD, DD, and a vinyl LP. The album is expected on September 8.

Remastered Neil Young Collection, Decade, To Be Made More Widely Available, CD and LP

neilYoungVinyl 4

By 1977, Neil Young had made quite an impression on his varied audiences. With the release of nine studio albums including his American Stars ‘N Bars set (1977), Neil Young was still in ascension. By then, he had been in CSN&Y, and gone. He had partnered with Stephen Stills in the Stills-Young Band, and had released such timeless songs as “Cinnamon Girl”, “Heart of Gold”, “Down By The River”, “Old Man”, “Sugar Mountain”, “Southern Man”, “Helpless”, “Cowgirl In The Sand”, “Winterlong”, 1975)”Ohio” (with CSN&Y), “and more. When 1977 arrived, he was swimming in popularity with solo albums like Zuma (1975), Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere (1969), the immensely popular Harvest (1972), On The Beach (1974), Tonight’s The Night (1975), and his most current (at the time), American Stars ‘N Bars.

It made complete sense to release an expansive retrospective for many of Neil Young’s classics. That came in the form of a 3LP set appropriately titled Decade. Released in 1977, Decade included 35 important songs from the songbook of Neil Young. Immediately, fans took to this classic collection and bought millions of copies worldwide.

On June 23, Reprise will once again revisit the classic Decade set with a 3LP reissue, as well as a 2CD reissue. This set will feature brand new remastering. Earlier this year, for the Record Store Day event, Reprise offered limited LP copies. Of course, not everyone can get out to a RSD event or even have the patience for it. Or worse, stand in line for several hours only to find it sold out before you were given entry to the store. And so, it’s good news to find that no only will Reprise Records provide this remastered gem for purchase (outside RSD), but will also provide it on a 2CD set as well.

Time to grab your copy if you’re so inclined!

Vinyl Turns To CD: Neil Young ORS 5-8, ORS 8.5-12 To Issue In CD Boxes

When it comes to audio perfection, we have no greater stickler in the profession than Neil Young. The digital world has long been a thorn in Young’s side. He held off from the transition to CD for ages during the formative years of the format. Eventually, he relented but only because time was moving on without a clear pathway to ease Neil Young’s grievance against the format.

Some of Neil Young’s mos enduring – and endearing – albums have been slow to make the lavish parades of reissues and remasters of Deluxe Editions and Super Deluxe Editions, all of which would have sold through splendidly.

On May 12, Reprise Records will release two separate CD Box sets that will house nine of Neil’s great high points. These are CD versions of he already released vinyl remasters that were previously released back in 2016. ORS Box 5-8 was originally reissued on vinyl on RSD on Saturday, April 19, 2011, and ORS Box 8.5-12 was released (on vinyl) on November 26, 2016. All were limited editions!

May 12 will deliver these analog remasters on CD with ORS Box 5-8 providing Zuma, On The Beach, Time Fades Away, and Tonight’s The Night, and ORS Box 8.5-12 providing Long May You Run (Stills-Young Band), Comes A Time, American Stars ‘N Bars, Rust Never Sleeps, and Live Rust.

A New Neil Young Album, Peace Trails, Expected In December

neil-young-peace-trailIn the distant past, a Neil Young release was a highly anticipated one. And nothing has changed about that. With a wealth of Neil Young issues that include his Archival sets (the third volume is planned for later in November), and a recent album of live tracks on his 2CD Earth set released in June. But now that those are finished projects, it’s nice to find that Neil Young has a new album of originals planned for the fans of his unique display of Rock and Roll.

On December 9, Reprise Records will release Peace Trail, an acoustic album of ten original Young tracks. The album – his 38th! – will be released on CD, vinyl LP, and – surprise! – cassette. I’m sure an HD version of the new album will also be made available soon enough, if not at launch date.

Ordering through Neil Young’s webstore, there are additional bundles that can be had such as organic earth-tone colored baseball cap with the stylized Peace Trail. There are a CD/Hat, and an LP/Hat bundles available as well as ordering the album in your preferred format without the cap. Order here.

And finally, Foghat is releasing a new album on June 24. And while I have mixed feelings about this, especially this one, I can understand that this is not a matter of people not getting along. Rather, it is a continuation of an impossible situation. I don’t have to like it. Personally, I’d rather they just had recorded brand new songs instead of re-recording classics for whatever reason was needed to do so. Nevertheless, for those fans who continue on regardless, Under The Influence is on the way. Get the full scoop here.

XL Recordings will offer two different LP sets for the Badly Drawn Boy debut, The Hour Of Bewilderbeast (2000). The label will present a 3LP Deluxe Edition, as well as a 2LP standard set. Both are slotted for release on December 11.

Elektra Records, in anticipation of the upcoming autobiography (Nov 24) by Carly Simon, will release a companion CD, Songs From The Trees. This CD is slated for November 20. My speculation is that it will be a fresh collection of Simon classics, not necessarily a ‘best of’.

It’s good to see The Innocence Mission back with a new album. Hello I Feel The Same is being released October 16 via Korda Records.

The Very Best Of Nicolette Larson Reissued In July

Nicolette Larson The Very BestIf you were a fan of the late Nicolette Larson, who logged in back-up vocal work for Neil Young back in the ’70s, and eventually covering his “Lotta Love” track from his Comes A Time LP, then this news is for you, especially if you didn’t snag the set on its first appearance in 1999.

On July 17, Varese Sarabande Records will re-release The Very Best Of Nicolette Larson. The solo performer, who is best known for her excellent Pop rendition of “Lotta Love”, released on her debut album in 1978, netted her Gold mark status with Nicolette in several markets.

The Very Best Of Nicolette Larson contains her charting singles that include her Pop-Jazz-flavored “Lotta Love”, “Rhumba Girl”, “Let Me Go, Love” collaborated with Michael McDonald, “I Only Want To Be With You”, and “Fool Me Again”. The set has sixteen tracks.

Nicolette Larson passed away in 1997, but for me, she still lives on in songs like “Lotta Love”.
