Jethro Tull Classic, Heavy Horses, Gets 3CD/2DVD 40th Anniversary “New Shoes” Edition

It’s nice to see the year of 2017 end on positive notes like we’ve had with some announcements. Normally, this a quiet time but for some reason or other, 2017 has remained somewhat lively, And with this new piece of news, it gets even more lively.

On March 2 of 2018, the next in line of album updates for the Jethro Tull band is Heavy Horses. Originally released in 1978, Heavy Horses followed up the popular Songs From The Wood (1977), with an album every bit as beautifully assembled as its predecessor. And now the 40th Anniversary Deluxe Edition remix of Heavy Horses naturally follows the 40th Anniversary DE of Songs From The Wood, which was released earlier in 2017.

Expected in this new reissue of Heavy Horses (called the New Shoes Edition) will be the Steven Wilson set of remixes of the original set of nine songs, which will be bolstered by the addition of nine bonus tracks (see list). The two additional CDs will provide a 22-performance track live set from a support show on May 28, 1978 at The Festhalle in Bern, Switzerland. The 2DVDs will provide the SW Stereo hi-res tracks in 96kHz/24-bit. two SW 5.1 Surround Sound remixes (DTS, DD), and a flat transfer of the original Stereo master. and three additional bonus tracks. DVD2 will present the complete May 28, 1978 Bern concert at The Festhalle on video. Closing the DVD off will be four extra videos, two music and two TV ads.

I’m sure the included 96-page book will add the value seen previously in past Jethro Tull Anniversary Editions.

TAPSheet: Release Notes – July 18, 2017

UFO, whose greatest period came during the middle to late ’70s with what are considered classic albums, namely Phenomenon (1974), Force It (1975), No Heavy Petting (1976), Lights Out (1977), and Obsession (1978). Of course, the band continued with fourteen more studio issues, but the band had changed by then. Phenomenon brought in 19-year old super guitarist, Michael Schenker. while Obsession saw his departure. Nevertheless, for die-hard fans of this classic era, i was he previously mentioned albums that are the best received.

On September 8, Chrysalis Records will reissue Phenomenon, No Heavy Petting, and Force It, as well post-Schenker sets, Mechanix (1982), and Making Contact (1983).  These albums are just re-releases from their last incarnation as remasters along with their respective extra tracks. In that, there is nothing special other than if you don’t have these, here they are again.

Chrysalis Records will also re-release previous reissues of Bridge of Sighs by Robin Trower, as well as Day Of The Eagle: The Best Of Robin Trower. Both of these previously released titles are expected on September 8.

It also appears that Chrysalis wishes to re-release three The Specials sets, Specials,  More Specials, and In The Studio. All are remastered as of 2015.They are also scheduled for September 9.

Real Gone Music plans the release of Guitar Star: The Complete RCA Singles A’s and B’s featuring the music of Duane Eddy. This 22-track CD is planned for September 8.

40th Anniversary 3CD/2DVD SW Remix Of Jethro Tull’s Songs From The Wood In May

One of the great pieces of news to arise at the end of last week were the release date and specs for the Steven Wilson remix of Songs From The Wood, the 1977 Jethro Tull classic. Back in October, it was revealed that this was indeed ready for pressing and distribution. (I think I might have made a few of you happy that day.) Now, in May, we finally can hear its magic.

On May 19, an all inclusive 3CD/2DVD 40th Anniversary package will be made available. Parenthetically referred to as The Country Set, this package will contain new Stereo and 5.1 Surround SW mixes. To bolster the package, there will be previously unavailable bonus tracks from the period of the album. There will also be a complete concert from 1977, mixed by Jakko Jakszyk of King Crimson (himself fast becoming a favored remix engineer like Steven Wilson). To make the set even more desirable, a 96-page book filled with everything will be included! The Book will offer:

– An extensive note by Martin Webb about the writing, recording and touring of Jethro Tull‘s tenth studio album Songs From The Wood.
– A track by track annotation of the album and associated recordings by Ian Anderson.
– Lyrics for the album and bonus tracks.
– An interview with studio engineer Trevor White.
– Steve Jeal explores the legends, myths and historical facts behind some of the album’s songs
– A recording and touring chronology from April 1976 to December 1977
– Jakko Jakszyk describes the technical challenge of synchronising video and audio recordings of a 1977 live concert

New 10-Track An Introduction To… Sets of CDs Planned For April

We still don’t have a hot running engine where strong releases are concerned. Interesting ones, yes. But not strong ones. No matter. Always something happening regardless. And that includes ten-track introductory collections from Flashback and associated labels. For most of you, this isn’t even an interest as you already have them in multiple ways. But:

On April 14, watch for nicely priced CDs for the following artists:

An Introduction To The Drifters
An Introduction To The Blues Brothers
An Introduction To Ray Charles
An Introduction To Nickelback
An Introduction To Keith Sweat
An Introduction To Jethro Tull
An Introduction To Hot Chocolate
An Introduction To Ben E King
An Introduction To America
An Introduction To Al Stewart

All CDs will not feature new remastering, and likely not much, if any, of a booklet.

Steven Wilson Remix Updates (Yes, Jethro Tull, Roxy Music, Tears For Fears, XTC)

Yes Tales From Topographic OceansThere has been a slight date change for the upcoming Steven Wilson remix of YESTales From Topographic Oceans that was originally scheduled for September 26. The new date is now October 6. If you were anxiously awaiting this bliss, you’ll have to wait a week longer. His other project works in release planning are King Crimson 40th Anniversary of the Adrian Belew-era titles (Discipline, Beat, Three Of A Perfect Pair) are still scheduled for October 20, XTC‘s Skylarking, which is on the calendar for October 13, and the upcoming Jethro Tull remix of Stand Up, planned for November 18.

Of interest are the finished but unreleased remixes of the Roxy Music debut, and Tears For FearsSeeds Of Love. It’s crazy that the Roxy Music debut has been finished since 2012!

Of even more interest is the discovery of another set of XTC tapes from the Virgin era. Speculation of which title it is is anyone’s game.

Steven Wilson has also stated in a post that he intends to continue work on he extensive Jethro Tull library, and mentioned This Was, Songs From The Wood, Heavy Horses, and Stormwatch in particular. ‘he also states that he’s not interested in ’80s Tull output so it looks like Stormwatch may be the end.

Finally, he obviously is very interested in doing up Kate Bush titles. Keep your fingers crossed.

Personally, I DARE him to consider (then do) Wishbone Ash‘s Argus. OF course, I’d like to see others but if anyone of these might get his attention, it will be Argus.

Stand Up, Jethro Tull Second Album Gets Remix Magic by Steven Wilson

Jethro Tull - Stand UpThe finely tuned folks over at the Steve Hoffman Forums have uncovered the next Jethro Tull remix as done by Steven Wilson. The selected album is Stand Up, the band’s second album, which was released in 1969.  It looks to be quite a rich reissue with plenty of added goodness as we’ve come to expect by Steven Wilson.

On November 18, Stand Up – The Elevated Edition will present with a wealth of bonus goodies that will please fans (see complete list below). Stand Up, under the trusted watch of Steven Wilson will offer the original album remixed, as well as provide higher resolution Stereo remixes, 5.1 Surround mixes in Dolby Digital and DTS. As the mouth-watering track list reveals, there will be a collection of other good things that include Stereo and Mono mixed singles, promo issues, Mono BBC Sessions tracks, a second CD filled with a live show from a January 9, 1969 set, The Stockholm Konserthuset. As if that weren’t enough, there are audio radio spots, and two video footage segments from the Stockholm show.
