Review: IV – Black Mountain

Black Mountain IVClassic is the term you’re going to get from me when I wax favorably over IV. As you may know (or not), IV is the new album from Black Mountain.

Black Mountain has a charged recording history with excellent music that remembers and celebrates the music of the past era of Rock and Roll, namely the late ’60s, very early ’70s. These aren’t cover tunes. They’re originals that could easily have given any of the bands from that time frame a fit as Black Mountain would have challenged those genuises with potential high charters. There’s not a doubt in my mind that Black Mountain would have led the pack. They certainly do now.

However, in this day and age, the many of us time-displaced “ancients” are warmly receiving of the music of such a band. Black Mountain sounds like the psychedelic Rock that thrived. But there is a hint of several other bands including Black Sabbath, and Jefferson Airplane. Unmatched at vocals is the lovely and talented Amber Webber, whose shimmery vocals highlight everywhere she appears. The guitars are heavy, the drums and bass sure-footed, and the keyboards a strong display of classic Rock and Roll.

IV contains ten new tracks, three of which exceed the 8-minute mark (YAY!). Those belong to the already released “Mothers Of The Sun: (see video below), “(Over And Over) The Chain”, and the album closer, “Space To Bakersfield”. The rest are still heft in time span with the least consuming is “Florian Saucer Attack”. In short, IV is a genuine classic that will sit well with their other classics, In The Future (2008), and Black Mountain (2005). And yes, I do love their Wilderness Heart from 2010. It just seems to fare less well than the other three. But that’s just me.

My suggestion is to waste little to no time to jump on this band’s wagon. With Amber Webber a part of the music, it just makes it all the more wondrous an experience. I just hope we don’t have to wait another six years before we get another Black Mountain release.

New Black Mountain Album, IV, Planned For April

Black Mountain IVEvery once in a while, I get excited over brand new music that’s not new remastering or remix or something. As some of you already know, I have a few new bands that I immensely enjoy! Black Mountain is one of them.

Their last new album was Wilderness Heart, which was released in 2010 (SIX years ago!). Previous to that were two genuine masterpieces, In The Future (2008), and the self-titled Black Mountain debut, issued in 2005.

Black Mountain originates from Vancouver and is comprised of Stephen McBean, Jeremy Schmidt, Brad Truax, Joshua Wells, and the beautiful and talented Amber Webber.

It is with great pleasure that I help to announce the arrival of their latest album, IV. IV is on the calendar for April 1 (a great 59th birthday gift for me as my birthday follows on April 2!)

The ten-track IV is planned for CD, DD, and a 2LP set from Jagjaguwar (a favored label of mine).

Black Mountain Celebrate 10th Anniversary Of Debut With Deluxe Edition In June

Black Mountain Black Mountain 10th Anniversary Deluxe EditionBlack Mountain, a Vancouver, BC band with a brilliant retro sound not unlike the heavy rock of the late ’60s, early ’70s, formed back in 2004. Formed with Stephen McBean, the excellent vocals of Amber Webber, and admirably rounded out by Matt Camarind, Jeremy Schmidt, and Joshua Wells, Black Mountain gave us an updated stoner rock sound that satisfied the music lover in a lot of us. (In the off times, Stephen McBean records with Pink Mountaintops, while Amber Webber and Joshua Wells create with Lightning Dust.) Their first album was the excellent self-titled Black Mountain album. Before it, the band offered up Druganaut, an EP of four tracks that featured an extended version of the title track, “Druganaut”, a modified version of which is found on the first full-length album.

Since the release of that first album, Black Mountain has gained a sizable fanbase. Their debut was followed up by the even more memorable, In The Future, in 2008, and book-ended by their equally memorable Wilderness Heart, issued in 2010. With 2015 well under way, I’d say that we’re anxiously awaiting a new Black Mountain album. However…

In our wait, it has been announced that their label, Jagjaguwar Records, will reissue the Black Mountain debut as a 10th Anniversary Deluxe Edition. Planned for June 23, this 10th Anniversary Deluxe Edition will come lavishly expanded with eight bonus tracks from the original sessions. That efficiently reels me in!

Planned is the inclusion of the Druganaut EP with three of its original tracks, a UK Radio Edit of “No Satisfaction”, and four previously unreleased tunes that include “Behind The Fall”, “It Wasn’t Arson”, and two demo tracks, “Set Us Free”, and “Black Mountain” (see complete track list below).

In its release, Black Mountain – 10th Anniversary Deluxe Edition will be issued on 2CD, DD, and a Limited Edition 2LP set with standard black vinyl, and a limited edition grey vinyl. The gatefold jacket of the 2LP will contain foil printing, as will the 2CD set.
