2CD 50th Anniversary Deluxe Edition Of The Grateful Dead Arrives In January

grateful-dead-50th-2cdThe Grateful Dead has left behind a legacy of awe and respect. The band enjoyed three distinct periods of popularity: their emergence and their Warner Brothers years and their UA-distributed Grateful Dead Records years, their Arista Records years, and the years that followed their official recordings (their last was Built To Last back in 1989). But their fan-base is still as rabid as ever. Plus, they continue to gain new fans.

The band formed in the middle ’60s. Their first album for Warner Records was their self-titled classic, released in 1967. And in 2017, that album will be fifty years old!

On January 13, Grateful Dead Productions will recognize that 50th Anniversary with a newly remastered Deluxe Edition of The Grateful Dead. In addition to already welcomed news, the release will add in another CD that contains the previously unreleased FULL show of their July 29, 1966 set at the P.N.E. Garden Auditorium in Vancouver, BC, Canada, and as another bonus, will include four live performance tracks from the subsequent evening at the same venue.

This 50th Anniversary Deluxe Edition will also be released on vinyl LP as a picture disc. It will be limited to a run of only 10,000 copies.

Good news, indeed, Deadheads!

Volume 35 of Dick’s Picks Grateful Dead Live Sets Arrives In January

This set includes the entire San Diego show, what could be recovered of the Chicago show, and, as a bonus, the end of the 08/06/71 Hollywood Bowl show.

And finally, Foghat is releasing a new album on June 24. And while I have mixed feelings about this, especially this one, I can understand that this is not a matter of people not getting along. Rather, it is a continuation of an impossible situation. I don’t have to like it. Personally, I’d rather they just had recorded brand new songs instead of re-recording classics for whatever reason was needed to do so. Nevertheless, for those fans who continue on regardless, Under The Influence is on the way. Get the full scoop here.

Grateful Dead Final Concert Planned On Media

Grateful Dead Fare Thee WellWhat to say about The Grateful Dead? Nothing! They have said it all. Simply put, if you’re a fan, this is something you’re interested in.

Rhino is celebrating the Fare Thee Well show played at the historic Soldier Field in Chicago, Illinois on July 4th of 2015. To do this, they are releasing several iterations of a Fare Thee Well package. The reason Soldier Field was chosen was for this send off was because it hosted the last show with Jerry Garcia 20 years prior. The three shows was held over the entire 4th of July weekend. For the show, the four core members of the band (Bob Weir, Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann, and Phil Lesh, were joined by Trey Anastasio, Bruce Hornsby, and Jeff Chimenti, all names that speak for themselves.

On November 20, Rhino plans to release Fare Thee Well (July 5th), on two big Deluxe Edition sets that include 4CD/2DVD. and 4CD/2BD (Blu-ray). In addition, there will be 2DVD, and 2BD video-only sets available. For the stubborn fan, there will be a distillation of the shows within a 2CD ‘best of’ package. DDs will also be made available.

Are The Rolling Stones The Greatest Rock and Roll Band Ever?

I haven’t swatted a hornet’s nest in quite a while. And wondering things in this narrow mind of mine, I thought I would throw out a debate. But before I do, I’ll give my opinions.

I’ve always looked upon The Rolling Stones as the definitive Rock and Roll band. Yes, even more so than The Beatles. Of course, I must say that ideally, The Beatles set the stage better than anyone when it came to evolution of music…even better than The Stones. But, when you get down to album for album, I have to say that The Stones come out on top in my book. Not for the number of albums produced, but for the quality of Rock and Roll with a brilliant mix of blues, R&B, Soul, etc found throughout.

Of course, there’s the whole longevity argument. The Stones has survived decades when the Beatles gave up the ghost before the advent of the ’70s. To e fair, if you factor in very successful and diverse solo careers, the members of the Beatles trump The Stones. The only Stones with a halfway decent Solo career is Ron Wood, while members of The Beatles sold incredible numbers with their albums.

Rolling Stones

Now, some of you may choose to go with The Who, or The Kinks, or even another band of incredible worth.

Still (and here comes the fiery dart for you to swat away and return), I say The Stones are historically the greatest Rock and Roll band on the planet!

And you say…

2CD The Best Of The Grateful Dead Set For March

BestOfTheGratefulDeadGrateful Dead is perhaps one of the most revered and followed bands in the history of Rock and Roll. They have all kinds of live albums released, most from the Dick’s Picks archives. Even with the death of Jerry Garcia, Grateful Dead still has a mystique that is largely unmatched. Over the course of their prolific recording period, where they delivered excellent original music in well over 15 studio albums.

Their live sets were as classic as their studio sets. Europe ’72 was a fixture on my turntable back in the year of its release, 1972. I played it often. When it comes to The Dead, I’m a fan. i may not be as fanatical a fan as some. But I love them.

On March 31, Grateful Dead Productions, distributed via Warner Brothers, will release a 2CD ‘best of’ collection called The Best Of The Grateful Dead. It will also be available digitally as MP3, FLAC, and Apple Lossless. Let’s hope for vinyl LPs!

The 32-tracks contained on this set are newly remastered from the original analog tapes by David Glasser. The set includes a rare 2 and a half minute single version of “Dark Star”, along with a 16-minute “Terrapin Station”.

Warner Brothers have Talking Dreams coming from Echosmith on October 1.

Partisan Records (home to Heartless Bastards) will be releasing the new Deer Tick album, Negativity, on September 24.

Metal Blade Records will release Battle Maximus from GWAR on September 17.

And finally, Cleopatra Records have a 2CD Live Anthology coming for ’70s supergroup, Captain Beyond, on September 10.  The album is completely named Live Anthology – Official Bootleg.  This album is hand numbered and limited to just 1000 copies.  So, if you were/are a Captain Beyond fan (and if you’re not, I would suggest getting listens to Captain Beyond (1972), and Sufficiently Breathless (1973) before ignoring this), then now would be the time to pre-order this live set.
