Barclay James Harvest 1970 Debut Newly Remastered and Remixed in 3CD/DVD Box

In recorded music, Barclay James Harvest have released a string of well-received progressive gems beginning at a time when Progressive music was still in its infancy. And for the better part of a decade after their 1970 self-titled debut, they had the attention of a dedicated audience. With seven songs, the album set a tone for their style moving forward. Their epic 12-minute “Dark Now, My Sky” is a rich, orchestral tune that made it easy to love if you were a bit adventurous. With subsequent albums like Octoberon (1976), Gone To Earth (1977), Time Honoured Ghosts (1975), the band became even deeper.

On May 25, Esoteric Recordings (a division of Cherry Red UK) will release a 3CD/1DVD Boxed set of the eponymous Barclay James Harvest debut. It will present the original album with a new remaster, and expand it with a collection of thirty-three bonus tracks that will include singles (A/B sides), sessions tracks, outtakes, a new 5.1 Surround mix, and a new Stereo mix, all from the original master tapes. In addition, there will be 96kHz/24-bit high resolution Stereo mixes, and a series of live BBC broadcasts to make this set a definitive one. The DVD will contain those new 96kHz/24-bit mixes (5.1 Surround, New Stereo Mix, Original Stereo Mix).

The box will provide a richly designed 68-page book with photos, essays, notes, and many other things to detail the release of this album, and the emergence of a talent in this band. Additional bonus adds include a replica orchestral tour program, two replica press releases, a replica 1968-issued record store poster announcing the release of the “Early Morning” single, and a postcards set.

New Barclay James Harvest Reissue Of Octoberon Planned For July

One of Rock’s more shamefully underrated bands are Barclay James Harvest. Originating in the late ’60s, when many of the English prog bands were starting to take root, BJH showcased an admirable ability to produce compelling and listenable music. Their first album, the S/T album gave the band their first official foray in recorded music, and helped to establish them with a core of fans. By 1976, BJH had amassed a strong collection of albums that include one of my favorites, Octoberon,

Octoberon was issued between Time Honoured Ghosts (1975), and Gone To Earth (1977). Both of those albums were excellent inclusions and Octoberon was no different. Therefore, it’s great news to discover that Esoteric Records will revisit Octoberon with a new Stereo remaster and 5.1 Surround mix. And let’s not forget the reputation of Esoteric to uncover sessions-based extras to expand on the album.

On July 21, Esoteric will release a 2CD/1DVD Deluxe Edition of Octoberon that will feature music worked on from the original masters. To further the definitive nature of this album, another in the long list of revisited BJH titles undertaken by the label, the DVD will feature films from this important timeframe as well as new Stereo mixes and high audio upgrades (see list below).

Along with this set will be a booklet with new liner notes, more photos, and restored classic artwork.

New Deluxe Editions Of No Earthly Connection (Wakeman), and XII (Barclay James Harvest)

There are two albums being revisited in 2CD Deluxe Editions, although the details are sparse. I decided to post them as bits of news to get fans aware of the upcoming titles (Christmas lists, saving of pennies, etc).

On October 28, Esoteric Recordings will continue their definitive approach to Barclay James Harvest titles with the release of a 3CD Edition of XII from 1979, a year after their Gone To Earth album. XII also represents the last album from the original lineup of the band. Of course, this new reissue will feature brand new remastering in the way of previous BJH reissues by Esoteric. And with 3CDs, the expansion should be as impressive as the previous reissues of earlier BJH titles.

On November 11, watch for a 2CD Deluxe Edition of No Earthly Connection, the loved seven track A&M issue by Rick Wakeman from 1976. With new remastering and a live set.

When more details arrive, I’ll get an update out on both of these reissues.

Two Barclay James Harvest Titles Get Massive 2CD/1DVD Reissue

Esoteric is a UK-based reissue label that not only creates fine reissues, but goes above and beyond by delivering a more than definitive remembrance of a favorite band. And they do this time and again without flaw and imperfection. The good news for this post is that Esoteric is doing this magic for two classic Barclay James Harvest titles. They are Gone To Earth (1977), and Everyone Is Everybody Else (1974). Read on!

Briefly, Barclay James Harvest formed in the late ’60s as an ArtRock band that was starting to gain popularity as an art form Rock and Roll expression. With other bands gaining in popularity by the use of ArtRock, it certainly made great sense. Their first album was the self-titled release from 1970. The band has well over fifteen releases including from another iteration of the band.

One of their great albums is Everyone Is Everybody Else. This album, their fifth, was released in 1974. It was followed by Time Honoured Ghosts in 1975, Octoberon in 1976, and Gone To Earth in 1977. While there were more great BJH albums, it is with Everyone Is Everybody Else, and Gone To Earth that we’re most interested in simply because these are the albums Esoteric is reissuing.

On June 10, there will be 2CD/1DVD explorations of both mentioned albums available to fans. Both sets will be fully remastered and expanded. Not only will there be additional material but there will also be new Stereo and 5.1 Surround tracks provided on the DVD add. (See track-listings for individual layouts.) A lavish booklet will accompany the sets filled with information, liner notes, restored art, memorabilia, and photos. Both packages will be housed in digipak sets.

Everyone Is Everybody Else will be reissued with seven bonus tracks, as will be Gone To Earth.
