Live…Gathered In Their Masses, New Concert DVD From Black Sabbath

We’re going to get everything from this incarnation of Black Sabbath yet.  After the release of their well-received studio album, 13, they embarked on a large-scale tour in support of the collection of new tracks and to thrill long-time fans with a near complete original line-up and live versions of many, many classic.  And they’re not done with upcoming South America and Mexico appearances on the calendar.

Many of their shows were sold out preventing more than a few fans from acquiring tickets.  The simple fix?  A DVD of live performances can do just the trick for those participating fans, and those left out in the cold.

On April 29 and May 1, the band had their performances at Melbourne, Australia recorded.  On November 26, the result of those films will be released on DVD (and BD?) in a set called Live…Gathered In Their Masses.  This DVD will arrive via Vertigo Records and Republic Records.

There are not a lot of details released as of yet.  Just this preliminary announcement.  But one thing is likely.  The footage contained in this set will be loud and wild.

Mark your calendars.

Unique Rory Gallagher Collection, Kickback City

Kickback City CoverRory Gallagher was a crime novel reader.  I didn’t know that, and I’m betting neither did you.  However rock artists, when traveling, waiting for soundchecks (seen a lot of this reading going on when I promoted concerts back in my younger days), or in-between whatever else rock artists are expected to do, have a tendency to read to fill in those moments. For Rory Gallagher, that was crime novels.

Eagle Rock Entertainment is creating a unique collection of Gallagher tracks suggested by Rory’s brother, Donal.  Donal Gallagher was the one who came up with the idea of fusing collected Rory’s Gallagher’s crime-inspired songs with a new crime story, which eventually was written by Ian Rankin.  The story is written incorporating many elements found in the lyrics of the collected tracks.  The 44-page novella (The Lie Factory) is graphically illustrated by Timothy Truman of DC Comics/First Comics fame.

The set is entitled Kickback City and will include an extra CD with the novella read by actor Aidan Quinn.  But after this, it’s all about the music.  There will be two CDs filled with familiar Gallagher songs (see track-list below).

The set will be packaged as a hardbound book with the three CDs found within.  To round out Kickback City, there will be a set of four crime-scene postcards.  What enhances this set will be the addition of seven live tracks (on the second CD, and called Kickback City Live) from performances at the Cork Opera House, all of which have been previously unreleased.

Legacy Recordings To Issue New Miles Davis Box, The Original Mono Recordings

Miles Davis, perhaps more than any artist, has been paid careful attention to musically.  His jazz music is highly influential, and completely enjoyable, and well received.  It doesn’t surprise me that Legacy Recordings has explore his vast recordings as much as they have.

MilesDavisMonoBoxIn a few short month, November 12, as a matter of fact, Legacy Recordings will unveil their latest Miles Davis album set, called The Original Mono Recordings, which collects nine early Columbia Records titles.  All of the titles (‘Round About Midnight – 1957, Miles Ahead – 1957, Milestones – 1958, Jazz Track – 1959, Porgy And Bess – 1959, Kind Of Blue – 1959, Sketches Of Spain – 1960, Someday My Prince Will Come – 1961, Miles and Monk at Newport – 1964), will be completely remastered in their original mono state, and delivered to you as fresh as can be.  What makes this set even more valuable is the fact that two of the titles are rare and have never before appeared in any Miles Davis collection.  This would be Jazz Track, and Miles And Monk At Newport.

The CDs will be housed in mini-LP replica jackets, all of which will then be contained in a boxed slipcase.  The box itself will have a 40-page booklet with complete information of each album, as well as photos, and a large 2000 word essay by Marc Myers.  The booklet will also contain liners notes on the album by album remastering processes.

For vinyl fans, Legacy will release a few of the albums in this package as stand-alone vinyl LPs.  Some of the titles have already been issued as LPs.  The three on the calendar for vinyl reissue are Kind Of Blue, and the two rare sets, Jazz Track, and Miles And Monk In Newport.  Those are slated for November 29.

History is tucked away in this box with brilliant new remasters adding sparkle to what are already highly polished musical gems and complete album works.

2001 Buffalo Springfield Box Re-emerges In 2013

Sometimes nothing changes, at least not too much.  Back in 2001, Rhino released a 4CD Box that scoops across the history of Buffalo Springfield with studio tracks, demos, alternate takes, and finished outtakes.  Given that this super band (with Neil Young, Stephen Stills, Richie Furay, Dewey Martin, and Bruce Palmer), only lasted through two albums as an intact band, with a count of only 34 tracks (including the twelve from their post disbanding Last Time Around set) to their legacy (22 if you only count the first two albums), they seared their existence on the minds of may, many fans.  Why?  Their potential was through the roof, that’s why.

So, when Rhino released the Buffalo Springfield box, it was well-received by the many fans that are still in love with that potential, and the limited amount of songs that sprung from the band.  It was filled with many previously unreleased songs in many forms, in a long box.  By now, the set has been run through, and there are likely not many to be acquired.

On October 22, Atlantic Records will alleviate that lessening of available copies by re-releasing the Box calling it Reformat (a sub-title of sorts).  There will be little new about the set other than the cover, which changes a bit from the original cover of the 2001 Box.  As for content, well, it is all of the same.  There is nothing new.  But if you were unable to score a copy of the Box, this is your grand chance to get yourself  “caught up” with your Buffalo Springfield collection.

To rehash what the set contains, CDs one through three are filled with 65 tracks related to the band’s studio releases in one way or another as outtakes, demos, and alternate versions.  Disc four provides the band’s first two albums in their entirety, with the debut presented in Mono.

Otherwise, if you own the 2001 set, then there is little to work up about here (for all we know as of yet).  But if you don’t own the 2001 set, here’s your opportunity.

The UK, trendsetters that they are, will release this new update of Buffalo Springfield (Reformat) on September 9.  As previously mentioned, the US will follow that release date with October 22.

TAPSheet: Release Notes – 08/30/2013 (US Report)

TAPSheet: Release Notes – 08/28/2013 (US Report)

Rhino/Parlophone have a surprise title on the list for October 8.  If any of you were fans of Ten Years After, and gave their 1973 classic Live album, Recorded Live any kind of needle play, then you will be very excited (perhaps as much as I am, maybe even more) to know that Recorded Live is likely being revisited in a 2CD set.  But that’s all I know about this one.  But bear in mind that the original title was a Columbia Records one.  And so this may just be confusing news.  The release title is genuine, but will it be the one we know and love?  I’ll let you know.

New West Records have added the new album from Howe Gelb (Giant Sand), The Coincidentalist, to their November schedule.  The new album is planned for CD, LP, and DD releases on November 5.

Slim Style Records will release Silver, a CD/2DVD set featuring the 2011 25th Anniversary The Mission UK reunion shows from their London, Cologne, and Frankfurt concerts.  Originally planned for September 10, this title is now scheduled for October 22.  Silver will also be released digitally.

MissionUK Silver

Roadrunner Records have Vengeance Falls from Trivium planned on CD and LP (with DD rights), and scheduled for October 15.

If you wondered where the hell Black Oak Arkansas have been, well, Atlantic Records (that’s right, folks…odd given the fact that most ’70s and ’80s bands find their new albums released on unknown labels…but there it is, Atlantic Records) plan the release of their latest, Back Thar ‘N Over Yonder.  This new album is actually a hybrid of five new songs, and ten previously unreleased Dowd-produced songs from their ’70s heyday. Yeah, it has me intrigued.  This is scheduled for October 15.

Original Recordings Group will reissue a John Coltrane classic on 180g vinyl 2LP in remastered form (Bernie Grundman).  The album, Olé Coltrane (1961), was Coltrane’s last for Atlantic Records.  The LP is being remastered in 45RPM speed and is slated for reissue on October 8.

Rhino and Blackened Recordings will reissue a handful of Metallica albums on September 24.  The titles will be S&M (2CD), Beyond MagneticRide The LightningMetallicaLoadMetallic Through The Never (soundtrack) (2CD), and Re-load.  Nothing special (I don’t think), just re-releases.  These titles follow the scheduled September 10 re-releases of …And justice For All, Garage, Inc (2CD), Kill ‘Em All, and Master of Puppets.

New West Records will release a 2-disc ‘best of’ collection featuring Dwight Yoakam called 21st Century Hits: Best of 2000-2012.  The set features a 14-song set, and the DVD collects five music videos, and the entire album in hi-res 24-bit/96k audio upgrade.  It’s scheduled for September 30 in CD and CD/DVD Deluxe Edition.

Partisan Records (home of Heartless Bastards) plan the release of Negativity from Deer Tick, on September 24.  It’s planned for both CD and LP.

Rhino/Parlophone will release a 2CD live set featuring UFO called Hot ‘N’ Live: The Chrysalis Live Anthology 1975-1983, planned for issue on October 8.

Play Pen Records will release the five-track EP, High Rise, from Stone Temple Pilots (with Chester Bennington) on October 8.

Yes, the Holidays are coming.  I know it’s only August, but in reality, we’re just four months from them.  That’s why Reprise is reissuing the 1989 Kenny Rogers XMas album, Christmas In America, with a scheduled date of September 30.

Legacy have a slate of holiday titles arriving in a Classic Christmas Album series.  The titles include loaded collections from Neil Diamond, Alabama, Johnny Cash, Andy Williams, George Jones and Tammy Wynette, Gladys Knight & The Pips, Barbra Streisand, and Martina McBride.  These Classic Christmas Album sets are scheduled for October 8.
