Live…Gathered In Their Masses, New Concert DVD From Black Sabbath

We’re going to get everything from this incarnation of Black Sabbath yet.  After the release of their well-received studio album, 13, they embarked on a large-scale tour in support of the collection of new tracks and to thrill long-time fans with a near complete original line-up and live versions of many, many classic.  And they’re not done with upcoming South America and Mexico appearances on the calendar.

Many of their shows were sold out preventing more than a few fans from acquiring tickets.  The simple fix?  A DVD of live performances can do just the trick for those participating fans, and those left out in the cold.

On April 29 and May 1, the band had their performances at Melbourne, Australia recorded.  On November 26, the result of those films will be released on DVD (and BD?) in a set called Live…Gathered In Their Masses.  This DVD will arrive via Vertigo Records and Republic Records.

There are not a lot of details released as of yet.  Just this preliminary announcement.  But one thing is likely.  The footage contained in this set will be loud and wild.

Mark your calendars.

Mike + The Mechanics To Issue The Singles: 1986-2013 (UK Report)

MikeAndTheMechanicsTheSinglesThe great UK reissue site, Super Deluxe Edition, is reporting a UK issue of collected hits for Mike + The Mechanics.  The 2CD collection is called The Singles: 1986-2013.  It will contain all of their single issues, including b-sides and rarities.  To make the set more incredible, the set will add in a previously unreleased track, “One By One”, and a brand new song, “When My Feet Don’t Touch The Ground”.

Over the years, and during the highly potent MTV era, Mike + The Mechanics pumped out hit after hit.  Those hits included “Silent Running (On Dangerous Ground)”, and “All I Need Is A Miracle” to name but two.

On October 21 (UK), The Singles: 1986-2013 will release.  This ‘best of’ can be pre-ordered via the UK arm of Amazon.

The Waterboys Zero In On Fisherman’s Blues With 6CD Fisherman’s Box

Mike Scott is a tireless individual.  With the past success of The Waterboys, especially their ’80s stuff, there is little end to the material that can be brought out.  Recently, the news was issued that there would be a UK Parlophone Records release of a 6CD Box featuring The Waterboys with a treasure trove of goodies.

The Box, being called Fisherman’s Box, will collect over 120 tracks from their Fisherman’s Blues sessions.  The collection extends from 1986-1988 sessions period.  The set will also release in a 7CD/1LP Box.  This box, whichever way you want it, is aimed at collectors of tracks and completists who collect all of the remnants of sessions in whatever form they appear.  The LP added in with the Deluxe Box is a remastered version of Fisherman’s Blues.

The Deluxe Edition will include a 32-page book, and three art prints.  You can acquire a little more info including the massive track-list from the Super Deluxe Edition website.

Fisherman’s Box is due on October 14.

Deluxe Edition Of Ring Ring By ABBA Is Coming

ABBARingRingDEMy friend over at Vintage Vinyl News is reporting a new Deluxe Edition reissue of an Abba album.  The album, Ring Ring, is the band’s debut recording issued in 1973.  In and of itself, Ring Ring may not be particularly noteworthy to some Abba fans because it contains no highly recognizeable Abba hits (in the US or Europe) that began to show up worldwide as early as the band’s next album, Waterloo (1974).  But nevertheless, it is an Abba album, and is historically their beginning.

Interestingly, Ring Ring was not attributed to the band’s soon to be adopted name of ABBA, but rather the tongue twisting  Björn & Benny, Agnetha & Anni-Frid.  No wonder that moniker disappeared quickly.

The title track, “Ring Ring” did do well in some areas, which brought fame to the band and giving their followup album the lift it needed to achieve their acquired fame.  For deep Abba fans, they are likely to be fond of some of the songs from Ring Ring.

The upcoming Deluxe Edition of Ring Ring will include, of course, the original album.  However, that will be bolstered by the inclusion of thirteen bonus tracks that will include non-album songs, and few other goodies and surprises.  The second disc will be a DVD with rare TV performances from this period as well as a 2012 talk with Benny as he discusses Ring Ring.

The Deluxe Edition of Ring Ring will contain a 20-page booklet.  As of now, Ring Ring will be an import title to the US.  It is slated for reissue on October 14 (UK), and October 22 (US, import).

You can get more in-depth info at Vintage Vinyl News by visiting this link (has complete track-list).

Unique Rory Gallagher Collection, Kickback City

Kickback City CoverRory Gallagher was a crime novel reader.  I didn’t know that, and I’m betting neither did you.  However rock artists, when traveling, waiting for soundchecks (seen a lot of this reading going on when I promoted concerts back in my younger days), or in-between whatever else rock artists are expected to do, have a tendency to read to fill in those moments. For Rory Gallagher, that was crime novels.

Eagle Rock Entertainment is creating a unique collection of Gallagher tracks suggested by Rory’s brother, Donal.  Donal Gallagher was the one who came up with the idea of fusing collected Rory’s Gallagher’s crime-inspired songs with a new crime story, which eventually was written by Ian Rankin.  The story is written incorporating many elements found in the lyrics of the collected tracks.  The 44-page novella (The Lie Factory) is graphically illustrated by Timothy Truman of DC Comics/First Comics fame.

The set is entitled Kickback City and will include an extra CD with the novella read by actor Aidan Quinn.  But after this, it’s all about the music.  There will be two CDs filled with familiar Gallagher songs (see track-list below).

The set will be packaged as a hardbound book with the three CDs found within.  To round out Kickback City, there will be a set of four crime-scene postcards.  What enhances this set will be the addition of seven live tracks (on the second CD, and called Kickback City Live) from performances at the Cork Opera House, all of which have been previously unreleased.

Legacy Recordings To Issue New Miles Davis Box, The Original Mono Recordings

Miles Davis, perhaps more than any artist, has been paid careful attention to musically.  His jazz music is highly influential, and completely enjoyable, and well received.  It doesn’t surprise me that Legacy Recordings has explore his vast recordings as much as they have.

MilesDavisMonoBoxIn a few short month, November 12, as a matter of fact, Legacy Recordings will unveil their latest Miles Davis album set, called The Original Mono Recordings, which collects nine early Columbia Records titles.  All of the titles (‘Round About Midnight – 1957, Miles Ahead – 1957, Milestones – 1958, Jazz Track – 1959, Porgy And Bess – 1959, Kind Of Blue – 1959, Sketches Of Spain – 1960, Someday My Prince Will Come – 1961, Miles and Monk at Newport – 1964), will be completely remastered in their original mono state, and delivered to you as fresh as can be.  What makes this set even more valuable is the fact that two of the titles are rare and have never before appeared in any Miles Davis collection.  This would be Jazz Track, and Miles And Monk At Newport.

The CDs will be housed in mini-LP replica jackets, all of which will then be contained in a boxed slipcase.  The box itself will have a 40-page booklet with complete information of each album, as well as photos, and a large 2000 word essay by Marc Myers.  The booklet will also contain liners notes on the album by album remastering processes.

For vinyl fans, Legacy will release a few of the albums in this package as stand-alone vinyl LPs.  Some of the titles have already been issued as LPs.  The three on the calendar for vinyl reissue are Kind Of Blue, and the two rare sets, Jazz Track, and Miles And Monk In Newport.  Those are slated for November 29.

History is tucked away in this box with brilliant new remasters adding sparkle to what are already highly polished musical gems and complete album works.

2001 Buffalo Springfield Box Re-emerges In 2013

Sometimes nothing changes, at least not too much.  Back in 2001, Rhino released a 4CD Box that scoops across the history of Buffalo Springfield with studio tracks, demos, alternate takes, and finished outtakes.  Given that this super band (with Neil Young, Stephen Stills, Richie Furay, Dewey Martin, and Bruce Palmer), only lasted through two albums as an intact band, with a count of only 34 tracks (including the twelve from their post disbanding Last Time Around set) to their legacy (22 if you only count the first two albums), they seared their existence on the minds of may, many fans.  Why?  Their potential was through the roof, that’s why.

So, when Rhino released the Buffalo Springfield box, it was well-received by the many fans that are still in love with that potential, and the limited amount of songs that sprung from the band.  It was filled with many previously unreleased songs in many forms, in a long box.  By now, the set has been run through, and there are likely not many to be acquired.

On October 22, Atlantic Records will alleviate that lessening of available copies by re-releasing the Box calling it Reformat (a sub-title of sorts).  There will be little new about the set other than the cover, which changes a bit from the original cover of the 2001 Box.  As for content, well, it is all of the same.  There is nothing new.  But if you were unable to score a copy of the Box, this is your grand chance to get yourself  “caught up” with your Buffalo Springfield collection.

To rehash what the set contains, CDs one through three are filled with 65 tracks related to the band’s studio releases in one way or another as outtakes, demos, and alternate versions.  Disc four provides the band’s first two albums in their entirety, with the debut presented in Mono.

Otherwise, if you own the 2001 set, then there is little to work up about here (for all we know as of yet).  But if you don’t own the 2001 set, here’s your opportunity.

The UK, trendsetters that they are, will release this new update of Buffalo Springfield (Reformat) on September 9.  As previously mentioned, the US will follow that release date with October 22.
