2001 David Byrne Austin City Limits Performance To Be Issued On CD/DVD, and LP.

From Austin City Limits, New West Records will release a CD/DVD, and separately available 2LP Live set from a 2001 show performed by David Byrne, the estranged leader of Talking Heads. And while it seems somewhat blasphemous that he would pursue these classic songs without the help of the band who helped make them what they were, also remember that this show was from November 8, 2001.

This set, being labeled Live From Austin, TX, showcases thirteen songs including his hit single at the time, “Like Humans Do”. There’s no doubt that Byrne was in fine musical form when he produced this set.

Live From Austin, TX: David Byrne will be released on June 2 in both CD and vinyl LP forms. The CD set will provide the DVD of the televised and performed show. The 2LP set will be produced in 180g-weight vinyl and will provide a download card for the digital format of the songs.

40th Anniversary 3CD/2DVD SW Remix Of Jethro Tull’s Songs From The Wood In May

One of the great pieces of news to arise at the end of last week were the release date and specs for the Steven Wilson remix of Songs From The Wood, the 1977 Jethro Tull classic. Back in October, it was revealed that this was indeed ready for pressing and distribution. (I think I might have made a few of you happy that day.) Now, in May, we finally can hear its magic.

On May 19, an all inclusive 3CD/2DVD 40th Anniversary package will be made available. Parenthetically referred to as The Country Set, this package will contain new Stereo and 5.1 Surround SW mixes. To bolster the package, there will be previously unavailable bonus tracks from the period of the album. There will also be a complete concert from 1977, mixed by Jakko Jakszyk of King Crimson (himself fast becoming a favored remix engineer like Steven Wilson). To make the set even more desirable, a 96-page book filled with everything will be included! The Book will offer:

– An extensive note by Martin Webb about the writing, recording and touring of Jethro Tull‘s tenth studio album Songs From The Wood.
– A track by track annotation of the album and associated recordings by Ian Anderson.
– Lyrics for the album and bonus tracks.
– An interview with studio engineer Trevor White.
– Steve Jeal explores the legends, myths and historical facts behind some of the album’s songs
– A recording and touring chronology from April 1976 to December 1977
– Jakko Jakszyk describes the technical challenge of synchronising video and audio recordings of a 1977 live concert

Vinyl Turns To CD: Neil Young ORS 5-8, ORS 8.5-12 To Issue In CD Boxes

When it comes to audio perfection, we have no greater stickler in the profession than Neil Young. The digital world has long been a thorn in Young’s side. He held off from the transition to CD for ages during the formative years of the format. Eventually, he relented but only because time was moving on without a clear pathway to ease Neil Young’s grievance against the format.

Some of Neil Young’s mos enduring – and endearing – albums have been slow to make the lavish parades of reissues and remasters of Deluxe Editions and Super Deluxe Editions, all of which would have sold through splendidly.

On May 12, Reprise Records will release two separate CD Box sets that will house nine of Neil’s great high points. These are CD versions of he already released vinyl remasters that were previously released back in 2016. ORS Box 5-8 was originally reissued on vinyl on RSD on Saturday, April 19, 2011, and ORS Box 8.5-12 was released (on vinyl) on November 26, 2016. All were limited editions!

May 12 will deliver these analog remasters on CD with ORS Box 5-8 providing Zuma, On The Beach, Time Fades Away, and Tonight’s The Night, and ORS Box 8.5-12 providing Long May You Run (Stills-Young Band), Comes A Time, American Stars ‘N Bars, Rust Never Sleeps, and Live Rust.

30th Anniversary Of The Joshua Tree Gets A Little Love

A little late, I know. But in case you haven’t seen this, U2 is reissuing their classic 1987 gem, The Joshua Tree. While I infinitely prefer The Unforgettable Fire, and many others will not move past the U2 trinity of Boy, October, and War, The Joshua Tree IS considered by many to be U2’s defining masterpiece. And there is no doubt the songs within are enduring and memorable. No matter your stance on U2 and their recorded body, The Joshua Tree is surely an album that belongs in your collection.

On June 2, Universal/Island will reissue The Joshua Tree in several ways to include a massive set of addition to the original. There will be a single CD featuring just the original album, a 2CD 30th Anniversary Edition that will present the original album as well a CD filled with live tracks called The Joshua Tree Live at Madison Square Garden 1987. That live set will feature 17 live performance tracks. The stakes are upped for the serious fan with the issuance of a 4CD Super Deluxe package providing a CD with six remixes of familiar tracks, and a fifteen-track CD filled with B-sides and outtakes including a 2017 Eno remix of “One Tree Hill Reprise”.

For the vinyl aficionado, there will be a complete 7LP set with all of the good stuff, and a 2LP set for the original. Of course, there will be digital as well. I’m even sure there will be Hi-Resolution DD, although this is NOT confirmed.

The 4CD Box will provide an 84-page book of photos, and eight color prints. These will be cased in a solid and durable outer box with a gold-foil press of a joshua tree on the top.

If some reports are to be believed, the year of these remastered tracks are 2007, the year they released their 20th Anniversary Edition. I consider that pure laziness on their part, but that’s just me. (I’d love to hear what Steve Wilson could do with these – and other – U2 tracks with his remix prowess.) If you’re going to this massive length, then go all the way, say I!

With the upcoming new U2 album in the works, it sounds like a good year to be a U2 fan.

If you want more, a quick trip to the official U2 site will put you in the lap of a mix of bundles that include tees, and record bags.

Lovely Creatures: The Best of Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds (1984-2014) Arrives In May

Nick Cave has released a wealth of creative and expressive works that have never failed to loved by his fans. Nick Cave began a long, illustrious career back in 1984 with the release of From Her To Eternity in 1984. To date, there have been sixteen studio issues and a small collection of live sets. The last studio issue was Skeleton Tree, which was recently released in late 2016. In all of that time, Nick Cave has developed and nurtured a serious fan base (including our good friend and occasional contributor, Adam Jahnke). It’s not a difficult task to pull from many selections to create a long due ‘best of’ package that best represents Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds.

On May 5, Mute Records will release several forms of Lovely Creatures: The Best of Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds (1984-2014). This collection will be released on a 2CD Edition, two digital editions- one that mirrors the 2CD, and one that replicates the 3CD sets, vinyl LP, and an excellent Deluxe Edition that features three CDs, and a DVD. A more delightful edition includes the three CDs, the DVD, and a huge 256-page book. Unfortunately, there are no new remasterings other than those provided on previously released reissues. Here’s the run-down:

The 2CD Set will provide 21 tracks within a six-page digifile pack. Two of the pages will be wallets that will home the CDs. Another will hold the richly designed and informative 24-page booklet, all on enduring art matte paper.

The Epic Archives Vol. 1 (1975-1979) With Cheap Trick Rarities Expected In April

In the late ’70s, Rock produced a quartet of unusual rockers in Cheap Trick. By the time of their second album, the band had appealed to a fast growing fanbase, which would  get exponentially larger by their live release of At Budokan. In fact, their rise to popularity was world-wide rather than the usual one country fixation that happens to many bands regardless of their country of origin. Also, in a nice twist to the usual stories of premature dismantling, Cheap Trick is STILL touring, STILL recording.

Over the years, Bun E Carlos (currently the one element of the original band that is at odds with the entire unit) had accumulated a treasure chest of recordings and live tapes. Much of the recordings he has archived include outtakes, live tracks, alternate versions of well-known songs, and a collection of demos, all of which show up in an upcoming volume of Cheap Trick essentials.

On April 28, Real Gone Music will release the first volume of collected rarities in The Epic Archives Vol. 1 (1975-1979) for Cheap Trick. And with the track list, it’s readily apparent that it is an essential for Cheap Trick fans. There’s a lot on here, folks. And with a potential following volume, more that we’d be delighted to have.

The album will feature 18 rarities. These include three demos before their Epic Records deal (“Come On, Come On”, “Southern Girls”, and “Taxman, Mr Thief”), two live Whisky performance tracks (“You’re All Talk”, “Goodnight”), and a wealth of excellent treasure pieces (see track-list). The booklet will feature rare photos from the period, while the music found on this Epic Archives set will be newly remastered (Vic Anesini). This will be issued on CD.

Thanks, Real Gone Music!

Esoteric Recordings To Release 2CD Quintessence Set, Move Into The Light – The Complete Island Recordings 1969-1971

In the late ’60s, just as progressive Rock was laying hold of me beyond the Top 40 list (that I enjoyed on WLS and WCFL AM radio in Chicago), I listened intently for hours on strange FM bands for bands like extended Yes, and others. One band that struck my interest was Quintessence. This band was a strange blend of Folk, Jazz, and Rock that reminded me of bands, It’s A Beautiful Day, and Renaissance, whom I had already discovered and enjoyed.

Quintessence was not long in the world from a recording standpoint. Their only recorded output were three albums with Island Records (which, at the time was a risk-taking label, and two with RCA.

On April 28, Esoteric Recordings will release a 2CD set, Move Into The Light – The Complete Island Recordings 1969-1971. This set will feature 28 tracks including live selections, and a single edit of “Notting Hill Gate”, a song from their 1969 Island debut, In Blissful Company. The songs will be newly remastered, and the booklet should be informative, and filled with photos, and new notes, including interviews with Phil Jones, and Dave Codling.

Quintessence’s music is mesmerizing and pretty timeless. Their lyrics are spiritual in nature but they make it all work perfectly. I’m looking forward to this new set.

New Tomita Album Features Live Symphony Of Final Work, Dr. Coppelius

Isao Tomita has been gone from us since May of 2016. I’m actually surprised that we’ve not seen any remasters or expansions by RCA. A BOX even. I think that his works contributed heavily to the beautiful ’70s, before sound and style upended (not unappealingly, mind you). But we didn’t get a representative set of refreshed Tomita music. But, we are getting something, Tomita fans.

On March 22, via Nippon Columbia, the first Tomita set since his death is being released. The new album is being called Dr. Coppelius, and is a live presentation of his composed symphony. It is the premiere of the symphony, played live at the 12th Bunkamura Orchard Hall by the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra. This symphony played live on November 11/12 in 2016. The symphony was conducted by Kazumasa Watanabe, with electronic parts performed by Aiko Hikari.

Dr Coppelius, of course, while an original work, is not a studio work. I have hope that it will be eventually done, and released as a studio work attributed to Tomita, for the enjoyment of his fans. You can see more here.

Tedeschi-Trucks Band To Release Live Set In March

The husband and wife team that makes up the Tedeschi-Trucks Band have released a few albums and live sets. Together, they’ve been making music since 2010. They have three studio albums, with the last one being Let Me Get By. In addition to those, they have a single live set, Everybody’s Talkin’, released in 2012 culled liberally from three separate 2011 shows.

Om March 17, the band will release a collection of performance tracks called Live From The Fox Oakland. In September 2016, they performed a series of two shows there (Sept 8th and 9th). They pulled the music from their September 9th show to create a new live set over a variety of formats that include video.

Live From The Fox Oakland will feature fifteen performance tracks. It is being planned for 2CD, DD, and combination 2CD/BD, and 2CD/DVD  packages.  The video will offer thirteen performances. I hope to see it emerge on vinyl LP soon!

Enjoy the video of “Keep On Growing” from the set.
