A New Look At Jerry Garcia Pre-Dead Years With 4CD Before The Dead Set

There are few individuals who have helmed some of Rock’s legendary band incarnations that garner as much intense visitation as Jerry Garcia has received. The Grateful Dead is today revered as one of the great Rock bands in the history of the style. And so it’s without surprise that given the intensity that Garcia visited upon his search for great music, there are still albums being introduced that bear his involvement.

On May 11, Caroline Records will release a 4CD collection of early, pre-Grateful Dead music assembled from wherever they were recorded. This Jerry Garcia – Before The Dead box will contain 84 songs that find Jerry Garcia exploring Folk music in a variety of venues including a birthday party.

With this set, one would be able to fit within the musical soul of Garcia and sense his evolution to what would become one of Rock’s greatest stories.

As an extra note: there are two Grateful Dead packages readying for release. The first is from Real Gone Music and is called Grateful Dead: Road Trips, Vol. 4 , No. 2 April Fools’ ’88, which is scheduled for June 1.

The other is a 140g-weight black vinyl 5LP reproduction of Cornell 5/8/77 slated for reissue on May 8 (date-released as a sort of respect and celebration of the historic date itself).

Barclay James Harvest 1970 Debut Newly Remastered and Remixed in 3CD/DVD Box

In recorded music, Barclay James Harvest have released a string of well-received progressive gems beginning at a time when Progressive music was still in its infancy. And for the better part of a decade after their 1970 self-titled debut, they had the attention of a dedicated audience. With seven songs, the album set a tone for their style moving forward. Their epic 12-minute “Dark Now, My Sky” is a rich, orchestral tune that made it easy to love if you were a bit adventurous. With subsequent albums like Octoberon (1976), Gone To Earth (1977), Time Honoured Ghosts (1975), the band became even deeper.

On May 25, Esoteric Recordings (a division of Cherry Red UK) will release a 3CD/1DVD Boxed set of the eponymous Barclay James Harvest debut. It will present the original album with a new remaster, and expand it with a collection of thirty-three bonus tracks that will include singles (A/B sides), sessions tracks, outtakes, a new 5.1 Surround mix, and a new Stereo mix, all from the original master tapes. In addition, there will be 96kHz/24-bit high resolution Stereo mixes, and a series of live BBC broadcasts to make this set a definitive one. The DVD will contain those new 96kHz/24-bit mixes (5.1 Surround, New Stereo Mix, Original Stereo Mix).

The box will provide a richly designed 68-page book with photos, essays, notes, and many other things to detail the release of this album, and the emergence of a talent in this band. Additional bonus adds include a replica orchestral tour program, two replica press releases, a replica 1968-issued record store poster announcing the release of the “Early Morning” single, and a postcards set.

5CD New York Dolls Box, Personality Crisis: Live Recordings & Studio Demos 1972-1975

One of the bump starts to a new era of music occurred when the New York Dolls took to NYC stages, a club at a time. With their wild and daring approaches, the solidifying of Rock’s ‘late ’60s. early ’70s years began to shake like a 9.0 quake intent on creating new tectonic plates. With only two albums in release before their demise, the New York Dolls left a legacy that is still heard and felt.

Of course, over the years there were presented a series of official and ‘grey-market’ material but until the band regrouped (without the services of Johnny Thunders, who died in 1991, and Arthur Kane, who passed in 2004), no new fresh songs were brought out to the fan base. (But subsequent guitarist, Steve Conte, was musically good in his role as successor to the irreplaceable Johnny Thunders.)

On April 27, a 5CD Box, Personality Crisis: Live Recordings & Studio Demos 1972-1975, will add to the mystique of the band that never was able to complete their full intended journey. One of the essential elements of this package is a collection of early, pre-Mercury Records demo sessions. With a presentation of 46 demos recorded at three separate studios, with a few bonus tracks (over two CDs), and five live locations including two that were radio broadcasts (over three CDs), there is more than a fan could possibly want in this collectible boxed set. (Just gaze at the track-list below!)

This set is presented in a clamshell box along with an essential booklet of notes, photos, and credits! The box will house the CDs in individual cardboard wallets.

No one will ever replace the phenomenon that New York Dolls were. They couldn’t even do i themselves decades later with new recordings. After their demise, their placement created a world of different avenues, with only Johnny Thunders maintaining a hard-edged punk style with the Heartbreakers (and a legendary solo outing that included So Alone!)

UK Record Store Day To Release PiL Album Breakout Of 2LP Concert Live At The Brixton Academy 27.5.86

A few years back, Public Image Ltd released Deluxe editions of some of their classic sets including the much loved Album. Contained within the generously  supplied edition was a live set from Brixton Academy circa 1986, the period of time in which Album was released.

The live Brixton Academy recordings consists of fourteen performance tracks. It’s now good news to note that an official release of the May 27, 1986 show will be reissued alone, apart from the Deluxe Edition of Album.

The set is being called – appropriately – Concert (live at the Brixton Academy 27.5.86). Currently, this is being marketed for UK Record Store Day as a 2LP vinyl set. This gatefold edition will include a fold out poster.

Record Store Day (UK) is scheduled for April 21.

Hopefully, a CD set will follow after the RSD promotions end for the PiL faithful and deserving CD adherents.

New Def Leppard CD and LP Boxed Sets To Be Issued

Def Leppard was a surprise arrival in the Rock world back in 1977. With young Joe Elliott as vocalist, and a high intensity guitarist, Steve Clark, the band immediately entered the charts with a Rock fan satisfying collection of tracks found on their 1980 debut, On Through The Night. It delivered a series of hits, some in the UK, and some in the US. The album itself was a high placement on both the UK and US charts.

With a catalog of eleven studio sets that includes the massive Pyromania (1983), with over ten million units sold, and the even greater selling Hysteria (1987), with over twenty million copies in fans’ hands, the catalog of Def Leppard is a valuable and exciting commodity. It has been undergoing an updating of which these boxed sets are a part of.

On June 1, Mercury Records will release two separately available boxed sets, one for CD, and one for vinyl LP. Both sets will be known as The Collection, Volume One.

The CD Collection will be six CDs, while the vinyl box will contain seven LPs. There will a special booklet housed in the case with the discs. The Rarities disc is the catch here as it is expected to contain radio sessions from the band’s early years. For the CD Box, the EP might be included on the Rarities CD.

The albums included will be:

  • 01 – On Through The Night
  • 02 – High ‘n’ Dry
  • 03 – Pyromania
  • 04 – Hysteria
  • 05 – Live At The L.A. Forum 1983
  • 06 – Rarities Volume One
  • 07 – The Def Leppard EP

More details will follow in a future update.

Jeff Beck Live At The Hollywood Bowl On 2CD/3LP Sets

For over 50 years, Jeff Beck has been a strong part of our music landscape. From The Yardbirds, his own bands, and a series of solo albums, he has left behind an immeasurable imprint on the whole of Rock and Roll. And still, he produces a fiery range of talent. Just a little over a year ago, he released a solo album (Loud Hailer). And he’s been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice, once with The Yardbirds, and once individually.

In the summer of 2016, Jeff Beck played at the Hollywood Bowl as one show in a celebration of his 50 years.

On April 6, Rhino will release a 2CD edition of Jeff Beck Live at The Hollywood Bowl. Previously, there has been  DVD and BD issues of the show, which featured a wealth of guest performers including Buddy Guy, Steven Tyler, Jan Hammer, Jimmy Hall, Billy Gibbons, and others.  Additionally, there were imports (into the US) of CD and LP recordings.

On May 25, Rhino will also re-release a 3LP vinyl edition of Live At The Hollywood Bowl. If you were unable to score imports of these CD and LP editions, this domestic re-release should help you out greatly.

Rory Gallagher Albums Remastered For CD and LP

One of the most criminally underrated guitarists is Rory Gallagher. With a career that started with Taste, Gallagher soon was solo after a breakup left him little choice. His first album was self-titled and released in 1971. Over the course of his short life span (he succumbed to liver organ failure a the age of 47 in 1995), he left a wonderful string of eleven solo albums and four live albums. It has been said that Gallagher was the requested replacement for Mick Taylor after Taylor left The Stones. Of course, that enviable position went to Ron Wood.

On March 16, Universal UK will reissue select Rory Gallagher studio and live albums on both CD and vinyl LP. These are not Anniversary sets nor are they Special Editions. There will be no bonus tracks. They are remastered, I’m sure, for vinyl reissue but will be made available on bare bones CD sets. These will include:

  • Rory Gallagher (1971)
  • Tattoo (1973)
  • Calling Card (1976)
  • Defender (1987)
  • Irish Tour ’74 (1974) CD only
  • Against The Grain (1975)
  • Live! in Europe (1972)
  • Photo Finish (1978)
  • BBC Sessions (1999) CD Only
  • Deuce (1971)
  • Top Priority (1979)
  • Notes From San Francisco (2011, Posthumous)
  • Stage Struck – Recorded Live (1980)

Previously, the first six Rory Gallagher albums were released as 40th Anniversary remasters in 2012.

Neil Young To Release Roxy: Tonight’s The Night Live

There were a few essential venues for live music in the ’60s and ’70s. In effect, some venues were just as notable as the band or artist that were booked into them for performances. One of them was The Roxy  located on Los Angeles’ Sunset Strip.

On April 21, Neil Young will dive into one of Rock’s most storied archives (his own) to present a 2LP edition of his September 20-22, 1973 shows at a new Roxy. The set is planned for release on Record Store Day. This set will be exclusive in that there will be an etched final side of the last LP.

A CD package, DD, and a standard, non-exclusive 2LP set (no etching) will follow on April 24.

Todd Rundgren Roxy Show Expanded In 3CD Set, All Sides Of The Roxy

Todd Rundgren has carved out a magnificent career for himself as solo artist, band member, and as producer for some of history’s greatest albums. His long and storied career has provided a large avenue for fans to traverse as they enjoy his every involvement.

Over the period of May 17 through the 22nd of 1978, Todd Rundgren performed two shows a night at the legendary Roxy Theatre in LA. Over the years, some performance selections were used on several Rundgren sets including Back To The Bars (1978), which contained songs from the LA club, and an expanded set for the Roxy shows in a 2001 release of Another Side of The Roxy.

On March 2 (US), and February 22 (UK), Esoteric Records will revisit the Roxy shows with a remastered set that will include the previously broadcast Rundgren show at The Roxy on May 23, 1978. On that simulcast, home-based via Wolfman Jack’s high-powered XERB, it was beamed to a multitude of FM stations resulting in one of the largest concert broadcast of the time.  The new 3CD set will be called All Sides Of The Roxy.

The first two CDs will be the original simulcast, while the third CD will be the original Another Side Of The Roxy, as a reissued annex to a greater – more complete – packaged set.

The set will come in a clam shell box and will be packed with a 12-page booklet with photos, and new notes of the event.

Currently, Todd Rundgren is touring with a reunited Utopia. (I saw Utopia in Chicago at Park West in 1979.)
