Two Classic Todd Rundgren Titles, Something/Anything and A Wizard, A True Star Planned For SACD/CD Set Updates

SACDs are certainly winding down in the industry. Once a hoped for sizable niche, the marketplace for them has diminished considerably given the practicality of DVDs (DVD-Audio), and BDs (BD-Audio). With necessary additional hardware needed to play them back, the marketplace now only has legacy owners of SACD units and pricey SACD-enabled multi-players. Because of that dwindling number, we hear of less and less. But that doesn’t mean they no longer issue. With a wealth of desirable titles out there still not converted to superior (in my estimation) SACD hi-res, it’s nice to see them trickle out. One of them is a favorite of mine, Todd Rundgren‘s excellent Something/Anything.

On January 12 of 2018, Analog Spark, a division of Concord/Universal, will reissue Something/Anything as a 2-disc package with an SACD and a CD included within a Stoughton gatefold jacket.

This will be a necessary add title for those fans of the album who still enjoy the sound quality afforded by SACD playback within your much beloved music listening arena. And of course, hearing massive radio hits “I Saw The Light”, and “Hello, It’s Me” in Super Audio splendor, as well as FM favorites, “Couldn’t I Just Tell You”, and “Wolfman Jack”.

Something/Anything is listed in Rolling Stone’s Greatest 500 Rock Albums of All Time at number 173.

Also from Analog Spark will be an SACD Hybrid reissue of A Wizard, A True Star, which is being released the same date as Something/Anything.

Jethro Tull Classic, Heavy Horses, Gets 3CD/2DVD 40th Anniversary “New Shoes” Edition

It’s nice to see the year of 2017 end on positive notes like we’ve had with some announcements. Normally, this a quiet time but for some reason or other, 2017 has remained somewhat lively, And with this new piece of news, it gets even more lively.

On February 9 of 2018, the next in line of album updates for the Jethro Tull band is Heavy Horses. Originally released in 1978, Heavy Horses followed up the popular Songs From The Wood (1977), with an album every bit as beautifully assembled as its predecessor. And now the 40th Anniversary Deluxe Edition remix of Heavy Horses naturally follows the 40th Anniversary DE of Songs From The Wood, which was released earlier in 2017.

Expected in this new reissue of Heavy Horses (called the New Shoes Edition) will be the Steven Wilson set of remixes of the original set of nine songs, which will be bolstered by the addition of nine bonus tracks (see list). The two additional CDs will provide a 22-performance track live set from a support show on May 28, 1978 at The Festhalle in Bern, Switzerland. The 2DVDs will provide the SW Stereo hi-res tracks in 96kHz/24-bit. two SW 5.1 Surround Sound remixes (DTS, DD), and a flat transfer of the original Stereo master. and three additional bonus tracks. DVD2 will present the complete May 28, 1978 Bern concert at The Festhalle on video. Closing the DVD off will be four extra videos, two music and two TV ads.

I’m sure the included 96-page book will add the value seen previously in past Jethro Tull Anniversary Editions.

3CD/DVD 45th Anniversary Edition of 1972 Roxy Music Debut Planned

For quite some time, Steven Wilson has let it be known that he had completed remix work on several classic treasures. With that, it was up to the labels involved to simply release them as packages. We’ll the good news of today is that Universal has decided to release one of those albums.

On February 2, 2018, Universal will reissue the 1972 debut album classic from Roxy Music. With this good news, we also get the package in celebration of the band’s 45th Anniversary as a Super Deluxe package.

This 45th Anniversary package will present the album in both Stereo and 5.1 Surround mixes (It’s important here to realize that the Stephen Wilson remix available will be the 5.1 Surround and NOT a Stereo remix, which is strange. SW did do a Stereo remix of Roxy Music while he had the tapes in his possession. Nevertheless, the Stereo version being released is not attributed to SW, and is an older Bob Ludwig master previously released.)

Watch for 3CDs and a DVD along with a richly contributed 136-page high gloss book. The three CDs provide the original album, a set of outtakes, demos, and a non-album single, “Virginia Plain”, which IS presented here as SW remix in Stereo.  One of the CDs will also provide several Live sets including two Peel sessions and a BBC broadcast.

The DVD provides a several videos of Old Grey Whistle Test, Full House, Royal College of Art, and Top of the Pops, and a rare club appearance. The DVD will be home to the two variations of the SW 5.1 Surround remixes (DTS 96/24, Dolby AC3).

There will be a 2CD Edition with only original album and the live sets. A vinyl LP is also in the release queue.

Enjoy!

Fleetwood Mac 1975 “White Album” To Be Expanded and Remastered

With the reissues of several Nicks/Buckingham-era classic albums, it was only a matter of time to get to the album that started that lineup. Their eponymous 1975 multi-platinum set that gave the world “Over My Head”, “Say You Love Me”, “Warm Ways”, and “Rhiannon” was ripe for the reissue pipeline. And while I personally love the pre-Buckingham/Nicks-era lineup better, I certainly do NOT hate this lineup.

On January 19, 2018, Rhino will release the next Fleetwood Mac reissue in several variations. Of course, the music here is newly remastered. But you will have choices with a single CD, (which features the primary album), a 2CD Expanded Edition that provides an additional four single edits on the first CD, and seventeen bonus pieces that show off the creative process of this album with embryonic early takes and versions, as well as a collection of live studio cuts.

There will be also be a Deluxe package that will deliver 3CDs, a DVD, and a vinyl LP of the original album. And a few things more for the avid Fleetwood Mac fan. This box provides the same two CDs as the Deluxe 2CD set, but will add in a CD of a collection of live tracks from three separate shows (Capitol Theatre – Passaic, NJ  10/17/1975; Jorgensen Auditorium – University of Connecticut Storrs, CT 10/25/1975; Campus Stadium – University of California 05/02/1976).

The included DVD for the Deluxe Box will contain high-quality Stereo (96kHz/24-bit) of the album’s original tracks as well as 5.1 Surround remixes. The 180g-weight black vinyl LP will be home to the original album tracks. All these will be housed in a 12″x 12″ embossed box (as seen below). The packed in book will provide photos, information and credits, memorabilia, new interview pieces, and new notes.

Several  early takes of popular songs from the album will be available individually as digital downloads or promo single streams (DD). Those are “Monday Morning (early take)” on 11/16/17, “Landslide (early version)” on 01/06/18, and “Say You Love Me (early version)” on 01/13/18.  Also, the CD and 2CD versions will be issued as DDs.

Celebratory The Purple Tour by Whitesnake To Be Released

Before David Coverdale achieved world wide fame as a major component of Whitesnake, he was a wunderkind in Deep Purple. Asked to join the band in 1973 at the age of 22, Coverdale made a great argument for replacing departed Ian Gillan. Sadly, after just three albums (Burn – 1974, Stormbringer – 1974, Come Taste The Band – 1975), Coverdale reluctantly left the band. Afterwards, he formed Whitesnake, and the rest is simple history.

On December 15, Rhino Records will revisit what is known as The Purple Tour with Whitesnake as the band. In 2015, Whitesnake released The Purple Album with selected Coverdale-era Deep Purple re-recorded tracks (six from Burn, five from Stormbringer, and two from Come Taste The Band). After the album was issued, the band went on their The Purple Tour to celebrate the Deep Purple years with Coverdale at the mic!

The Purple Tour will be released on CD, 2LP, and video combo packs, CD/DVD, and CD/BD sets. With the DVD and Blu-ray sets, there will be the concert video (in 5.1 Surround as well as Stereo), a promo video of “Burn”, an interview: On The Hot Seat with Michel Devin, and four hi-resolution tracks presented in 5.1 Surround audio.

Upcoming 3CD/4LP/1BD-Audio 40th Anniversary Edition of Rush Classic, A Farewell To King

Rush has had no lack of fans over the course of their long-running tenure. With nary a change in personnel, or a disruption in creativity, Rush has maintained a solid fanbase. During their heights, they sold several million copies of 2112, and four million units of Moving Pictures. Rush sold platinum through 1991 with Roll The Bones. Even afterwards, during a period of drastic change and interest, Rush never sold below Gold status, their last being Clockwork Angels from 2012. But it was officially A Farewell To Kings that gave them the legitimate push into Top40 radio with the release and acceptance of “Closer To The Heart”.

On December 1, the band celebrates the 40th anniversary of A Farewell To Kings with a massive and lavish edition of a Super Deluxe Edition Box of the classic album.

The SDE Box will provide 3CDs (original album with 2015 remaster, and a complete show from the Dec , a high resolution 5.1 Surround and a Stereo set of mixes by Steven Wilson on a BD-Audio disc (and three videos), 4LPs of high quality 180g-weight vinyl (and an included DD rights card). The beautifully redesigned cover on the box and more bonuses inside include a unique Kings Ring held within a custom velvet pouch, a richly designed book with photos, a massive essay, notes, credits, memorabilia, two newly designed lithographs, three baseball cards, a 12″ turntable mat, and a replica A Farewell To Kings tour program.

But if all of that definiteness is too rich for you because you’re not THAT great a fan, or you simply refuse to spend that kind of money, then here are several other configurations of this new set.

There will be a three CD set that will contain the same content found on the 3CDs within the SDE. There is also a separately available 4LP set. And as usual, there is DD availability.

40th Anniversary Remastered and Expanded Sets For Hotel California (The Eagles)

Many have favored albums from The Eagles. For me, it’s One Of These Nights, released back in 1975. But, in 1976, and with the addition of Joe Walsh to the line-up, The Eagles released their most widely loved album, Hotel California.  It sold over 32 million units, generated two number one singles (“Hotel California”, “New Kid In Town”), and another with “Life In the Fast Lane”. The album won two Grammy Awards for the two singles and lost Album of The Year to Rumours.

On November 24, a 40th Anniversary Deluxe Edition of Hotel California will be made available with a ton of expanded coolness.

The album will be newly remastered and presented in several forms.

The 2CD/BD will provide the original album, a previously unreleased LA Forum (October 1976) live set with ten performance tracks, and both hi-res Stereo tracks (192 kHz/24-bit) as well as 5.1 Surround mixes (Advanced Resolution, and Dolby Digital). To make a great  package even better, an 11 x 11 hardbound book will be included stuffed with photos, write-ups, memorabilia, credits, and notes. A replica tour book is included as well as an 11 x 22 poster.

For others, there will be a 2CD set. a single CD edition, and the expected digital download availability. If you go to The Eagles website, you can pre-order cool bundles there.

ELP To Release All Inclusive Fanfare 1970-1997 Box

When it comes to Emerson, Lake & Palmer, few bands have had the luxury they’ve enjoyed of being revisited in many ways in a short time. But they’ve been worth it. You may not need to replenish an already existing library as frequently as they’ve had their albums revisited, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have the opportunity or choice. I sure wish that many bands that I’ve loved over the years had just a portion of that attention to music.

(For years, I’ve envisioned a Deluxe Edition of Wishbone Ash’s magnificent Live Dates. With two discs of cherry-picked performance tracks from four shows, I’d LOVE to hear each show in their entirety. What a package that’s be!! Additionally, I have love for Crawler, the band that evolved from Back Street Crawler after Paul Kossoff’s death. I’d love to hear the original album (with “Stone Cold Sober”) remastered, as well as some live material, and perhaps some embryonic demos and alternate tracks. To hear “Stone Cold Sober” in its early form would be very, very cool!! And let’s not forget the insights a new booklet would provide us for both albums!)

On October 27, BMG will produce a Limited Edition Deluxe Box named Fanfare 1970-1997 that will house all eleven official ELP album releases (in their most recent remastering) within a lavish, numbered rigid matte-black Box with foil-blocked cover text. Those albums are:

  • Emerson, Lake & Palmer (1970)
  • Pictures At An Exhibition (1971)
  • Tarkus (1971)
  • Trilogy (1972)
  • Brain Salad Surgery (1973)

  • Works Volume 2 (1977)
  • Love Beach (1978)
  • Black Moon (1992)
  • In The Hot Seat (1994)

But nothing great sits alone. The box will also be blessed with:

  • Live in Rome & Milan Italy 1973 (previously unreleased) as a gatefold vinyl 3LP set
  • Previously unreleased CD albums, mastered by the
internationally celebrated studio engineering team of
Andy Pearce and Matt Wortham of:

New Steven Wilson Remix of XTC’s Black Sea

Every once in a while, a guy named Steven Wilson makes a group of fans deliriously happy. This is especially true if you happen to agree with Mr Wilson on bands that he loves (generally the only ones he’ll work with). In this case, it’s XTC, a band he has consistently worked with to remix their library of loved albums. A few days ago, SW took to social media to inform XTC fans that his next album to be released would be Black Sea.

Black Sea is XTC’s fourth album. Released in 1980, prior to English Settlement (1982), this album further helped to build on the growing love for this band. By 1980, XTC had released seven singles. Black Sea generated five hit singles all by its lonesome.

On November 10 (there is some rumor that this SW remix will be released later than this date. A page from Burning shed directly related to this release has been removed. So…who knows. We’ll stick with November 10 unless proven otherwise.), Black Sea will be released with the new Stereo remix, and a 5.1 Surround mix. As bonuses, there will be a selection of album-related material.

The CD/BD package will deliver the 2017 Stereo remix, a surround remix in 96kHz/24-bit LCPM version as well as a DTS-HD version in 96kHz/24-bit. A Stereo 96kHz/24-bit hi res is included on the BD. There will be additional songs from the sessions, as well as instrumental versions. Included will be demos (in mostly live form). There are three videos inclusions (“Towers of London”, “Generals & Majors”, “Respectable Street”).

[UPDATE] 25th 3CD/BD Anniversary Set For Automatic For The People (R.E.M.)

R.E.M. has an anniversary arriving for Automatic For The People. Originally released in 1992, 2017 marks the 25th Anniversary for the classic album that spawned well over eighteen million units of sales.  In addition to the massive sales of the album, there were six singles pulled from the set that include “Drive”, “Man On The Moon”, “The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonight”, “Everybody Hurts”, “Nightswimming”, and “Find The River”. You’ll be hard pressed to find yourself not familiar with any one of those songs. Plus, if you’re a serious R.E.M. fan, then the entire album is well-known to you.

On November 10, a 25th Anniversary Edition of Automatic For The People is scheduled. The first CD will contain the original CD. CD2 will provide a 13 performance track live set from their 11/19/1992 show at the 40 Watt Club (Athens, GA). CD3 will deliver 20 demo tracks. The Blu-ray addition will provide a Dolby Atmos 5.1 mix of the original album, videos, and a hi-res Stereo (so it seems) set of the album. There will be a few additional bonuses.

A truncated 2CD Edition will also be made available.

A book will be packed in with filled with brilliant things like notes, photos, and plenty of information surrounding this great album.
