[UPDATE II] WISHBONE ASH 30CD BOX – THE VINTAGE YEARS 1970-1991

We now know that this limited Edition 30CD The Vintage Years 1970-1991 Box set featuring a TON of classic Wishbone Ash material including bonus session tracks will be released on April 20 of 2018. The set is limited to only 2500 copies worldwide and will carry a price tag of $337 (US), and £250 (UK).  This set is currently on pre-order.

We also know a bit more about inclusions. The set will not only contain remastered albums (many from original source tapes, as I’ve long understood Wishbone Four, and There’s The Rub original tapes to be considered gone for good) from the Wishbone Ash debut through Strange Affair albums, but also a wealth of bonus material. You can expect ‘rare album outtakes, B-sides, and 12 previously unreleased studio tracks’, all slipcased within mini-LP cardboard gatefold sleeves.

The Live collection will include the first  Live Dates album, Live Dates Volume Two, and Live in Tokyo. The additional live sets include eight previously unreleased live shows, all between the golden era of 1973 through 1980:

  • Portsmouth Guildhall 1973 (2CD) from the Wishbone Four / Live Dates tour.
  • Southampton University 1973 from the Wishbone Four / Live Dates tour.
  • Edinburgh Usher Hall 1976 from the New England tour.
  • Marquee Club 1977 from the Front Page News tour.
  • Newcastle City Hall 1977 from the Front Page News tour.
  • Bournemouth Winter Gardens 1978 (2CD) from the No Smoke Without Fire tour.
  • Guildford Civic Hall 1980 (2CD) from the Just Testing tour.
  • Chelmsford Odeon 1980 from the Blowin’ Free tour.

We know that tracks from the Portsmouth Guildhall show were used in the original Live Dates set. Here, we get the entire show over 2CDs. Unfortunately, that’s all from that album. (This means that a Deluxe Edition of Live Dates is STILL a viable grail set with ALL shows remastered and presented, along with a rich booklet of remembrances, and memorabilia included. C’mon Universal, Martin, and Andy! Please?!)

The Box will also include 156-page book of photos, memories, and other goodies. A 36-poster book is added as are four fold-out posters reproductions of original posters for: Christmas at the Palace Dec 1973, Live Dates European tour – Hamburg Musikhalle 1974, Europe 1975 tour, and the Front Page News tour – Empire Pool Wembley 1977.

A facsimile promo pack from MCA is stuffed into this box along with a 7″ flexidisc of “Blind Eye”. To finish the box, signed photos of the band members will be provided.

The Best Of The Grateful Dead Live For 2CD and 2LP

Fans of The Grateful Dead are never too far without new product. There are the Dick’s Picks sets, the various reissues, the collections, etc…

On March 23, Grateful Dead Records will change it up a bit with the release of The Best Of The Grateful Dead Live. It is a 2CD set with a carefully selected set of nineteen tracks from various venues. The dates run the gamut of time from 1969 to 1995. The dates are time-linear presented over the two CDs (see track list below).

There will be a vinyl edition of this called The Best Of The Grateful Dead Live – Volume One: 1969-1977, and contains ten tracks over 2LPs, with the contents of CD1.

Nightwish To Release Career Spanning Set, Decades: An Archive Of Song (1996-2015)

For more than twenty years, the Finnish band, Nightwish, has helped to nurture the symphonic metal genre. Started in 1996, Nightwish has produced eight studio albums, the last being Endless Forms Most Beautiful in 2015. Their vocalists have been female since their inception. The first, Tarja Turunen stayed until 2005, where she left for a solo career given her magnificent vocal range. Today, the vocalist is Floor Jansen, whose vocal style is different and yet quite adaptive to multiple applications of style.

Nightwish has proven successful worldwide since their Dark Passion Play set from 2007 where they entered every chart available and the US chart for the first time.  Since, their music has become widely accepted with subsequent albums topping charts at higher and higher points.

On March 9, Nuclear Blast Records will release a 2CD compilation of twenty-two songs from the catalog of Nightwish. This collection is being called Decades: An Archive of Song (1996-2005). Decades will be released as 2CD (jewelcase), 2CD (digipak), a 2CD Earbook Box, DD, 3LP Limited Edition (500) Gold vinyl Box, 3LP Limited Edition (500) Silver vinyl Box, and a 3LP Black vinyl Box. The Digipak, Earbook Box, and Vinyl 3LP Boxes will follow on March 16.

Massive 2CD/2DVD/LP Box Set For Fish Out Of Water by Chris Squire

With the release of Fragile, YES became the premier definition of Progressive Rock. With a series of successful and, in some cases, expanded, albums after Fragile (Close To The Edge is considered one of the genre’s finest creations, while Tales From Topographical Oceans is considered its heaviest), the success of Yes allowed the band certain freedoms not usually afforded to most. Individual projects.

During a period of inactivity, each member of Yes released solo works. For Chris Squire, that was Fish Out Of Water. Fish Out Of Water was well-received by fans, charting well in charts.

On April 27, Esoteric Recordings will revisit this classic 1975 solo album with a massive Limited Edition Box of the album filled to the literal brim with a wealth of material including a 5.1 remix of the album, something that Chris Squire was interested in.

The new edition of Fish Out of Water will feature a brand new remix AND remaster of the album, both desired aspects of any reissue. But this one goes even further to make Fish Out Of Water a definitive set worth owning among fans of the work.

This Box will present 2CDs, 2DVDs, a 180g-weight vinyl LP in a gatefold sleeve, two 7″ vinyl singles, a fold-out poster (in the LP sleeve), and a 36-page book with new essays, uncovered photos, and plenty of information concerning this classic album.

The Stereo remix is created by Jakko Jakszyk and is found on CD1. The Stereo remaster of the album is found on CD2 along with four bonus inclusions (single mixes of “Lucky Seven” and “Silently Falling”, and two recorded songs with Alan White, “Return With The Fox”, and “Return Of The Fox”).

The included DVDs have gems as well. DVD1 presents both 5.1 and  Hi-resolution Stereo, both at 96kHz/24-bit, and both created by Jakko Jakszyk, In addition, the Paschal Byrne remastered Stereo remaster is also presented in hi-res 96kHz/24-bit clarity. DVD2 provides a collection of visual content including interviews and a Chris Squire audio commentary. The LP is as expected, and the two 7″ singles in picture sleeves. Each of the singles include the bonus tracks found  on CD2.

Personally, I love undertakings such as these that are targeted to the serious fan. Not only do we get definitive sets likely to never be matched in such detail again, but a classic revisited is always a great thing.

Enjoy, fans!

New Joan Baez Album, Whistle Down The Wind, Arriving

For decades, and especially at the beginning of the Rock phenomena that many of us find a way of life these days, there was Joan Baez. Her first album was released back in 1960, a light-year of time ago for many of us. From there, her fame grew. By 1970, she had a strong hit with a cover of The Band’s “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down”. Her version is still considered a strong version of one the great singles of all time.

Over her lifetime, Joan Baez has released over twenty albums. During the ’60s and ’70s, many of her sets were consistently charting high until time and the political environment had found little use of her activism and voice. Great albums like Diamonds & Rust (1975) were incredible productions. Regardless, as legend, Joan Baez continued to tour, record, and release new music. Her last album, Day After Tomorrow (2008), charted respectably.

On March 2, Joan Baez will release her newest album, Whistle Down The Wind. It is a mix of covers and originals in a collection of ten songs. Two tracks (including the cover song) were penned by Tom Waits and Kathleen Brennan. Another is a Mary Chapin Carpenter song (“The Things We Are Made Of”) done in the inimitable Baez fashion. Listening to the title track, I feel confident that Whistle Down the Wind will be a beautiful Joan Baez addition to a strong library.

Whistle Down The Wind will be released on CD and vinyl LP, as well as in the DD format.

Two Magazine Classics To Be Reissued As 180g Vinyl Issues

Magazine, a post-punk band from the late ’70s (and a personal favorite from the era), is helmed by Howard DeVoto, who left The Buzzcocks to form the band. Although the band only released five albums (four during their original tenure, one late addition to the library), their impact was incredible and noteworthy. Few bands during this formative period gained much notoriety in the US due to the rise of metal bands and Pop music. But in the UK, many of these bands were at the top of their game. Nevertheless, the US had some extremely attentive music lovers who scoured for the obscure bands.

On February 2, two of Magazine‘s albums will be reissued on 180g-weight vinyl. The albums planned for release are the band’s debut issue, Real Life (1978), and their last original tenure set, The Correct Use of Soap (1980). These bookends SHOULD be accompanied by their middle two, but I’m a patient sort.
These vinyl LPs are funded through Pledge Music and will be issued through the UK market. So if you want one (or both), either get thee over to PledgeMusic (here), or be vigilant at the UK market stalls (physically or virtually).

If you need a refresher (or introduction) to Magazine, listen below.

All Nerve, The New Upcoming Album By The Breeders Classic Lineup

The historic label 4AD is often home to some of the most incredible music since the ’80s. Started in 1980, he label was soon home to Dead Can Dance, The Pixies, Red House Painters, Cocteau Twins, Modern English, Clan of Xymox, This Mortal Coil, and more memorable bands.

One of those memorable bands is The Breeders. The Breeders were formed in 1989 from parts of The Pixies, and Throwing Muses. Since 1990, The Breeders have released four classic albums beginning with Pod. Their slow release pattern simply highlighted their roots as music had to wait while the main bands thrived. Their next was released in 1993, Last Splash. There would be a long wait until their third album, Title TK, released in 2002. Now, eight years after the release of their last album, Mountain Battles, The band line-up features the Deal sisters (Kim and Kelley), with Josephine Wiggs, and Jim Macpherson, all who returns with a new album in hand.

On March 2, 4AD will release All Nerve. It will contain eleven new The Breeders tracks. The first single is “Wait In The Car”. If you’re fond of The Breeders, then you will immediately enjoy the infectious Pop/Punk of the classic sound. It brings you back, as it should!

All Nerve will arrive on CD, DD, and on 180g-weight black vinyl.

Erika Wennerstrom (Heartless Bastards) To Release Debut Solo Album, Sweet Unknown

For many years, the under-construct of Heartless Bastards has Erika Wennerstrom.  Throughout their magnificent career, Erika was always at the heart of the band. Most of the songs, if not all of them, were written by Erika. In fact, the lineup had changed several times with Erika remaining as the core. And now, we get a long overdue Erika Wennerstrom album with her name as the focal point! I’m ready for this!

On March 23, Partisan Records (Heartless Bastards’ label over the last two releases (Arrow – 2012, Restless Ones – 2015)) will issue the next evolutionary step in the Heartless Bastards tree with the first solo album by Erika Wennerstrom. The new album is being called Sweet Unknown, which is a lyric phrase pulled from an HB song, “Could Be So Happy” (from The Mountain -2009).

If you’re interested in bundles and swag, then hop over to the PledgeMusic site where the album is crowdfunded for a wealth of bundling and cool things (including a $4000 house concert. If only I had the nickels and dimes for this one!).

Sweet Unknown will contain nine new Wennerstrom tracks. The heralding song, “Extraordinary Love” is now available as of a few days ago. It strongly indicates a great awaiting experience. The music from the song is warmly comfortable. It’s familiar and strong.

Sweet Unknown will be released on CD, DD, and vinyl 2LP (including a limited run of white vinyl). The 2LP set will provide a vinyl -only bonus of four radio edits of “Extraordinary Love”, “Letting Go”, “Be Good To Yourself”, and “Staring Out the Window”. All vinyl editions will provide digital downloads of the album.

March 23 can’t get here soon enough!

The Complete Clapton Is Being Re-Released In 4LP Box

Back in 2007, Reprise had released a 2CD, 36-track Eric Clapton collection called The Complete Clapton. It contained a swarm of tracks from every facet of his career trajectory including solo, Blind Faith, and Cream.

Now that the vinyl resurgence has hit and shows little slow down, this is a title that is now needing to be replenished for that market. Using all tracks, this vinyl edition will spread over 4 LPs, eight sides. If you didn’t get one the first time around, here is a rare opportunity to fix that.

On March 2, watch for this 4LP Box. If you’re a vinyl fan and are pleased to find this bit of news, be prepared.
