New 50th Anniversary 10CD Box For Ten Years After, 1967-1974

It’s always great to see one of your favorites bands getting nice treatment, especially so far away from their active years. For fans, the name of Ten Years After is one that draws great memories. From their dynamic showcase at Woodstock through a few singles and LP releases, Ten Years After certainly has earned their place in the sun. (We won’t talk about the inefficiencies of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.)

During their time, not counting the years after their first dismantling, they have released eight classic albums beginning with Ten Years After (1967), and ending with Positive Vibrations (1974). In between, the band delivered greatness with “I’d Love To Change The World”, “Rock and Roll Music To The World”, “Love Like A Man”, “I’m Going Home”, and “Choo Choo Mama” (to name just a few).  A brief but powerful tenure in the annals of Rock!

On December 22, Chrysalis Records will assemble a 10CD 50th Anniversary Box celebrating the band. The Box is being labeled as 1967-1974. This box will provide a total of 82 songs, most newly remastered for this limited edition set of only 1500 copies. Of course, every song from their Deram and Columbia catalog is represented here. (No Recorded Live! Sigh!)

This box set also includes previously unreleased music on a single CD.

New Franz Ferdinand Album, Always Ascending, In 2018

Franz Ferdinand, one of the new millennial bands, haven’t released a new album since 2013’s Right Thoughts, Right Words, Right Actions.  From their first release until their last, the music they produce has been current and listenable. As a fan, it’s just the wait that has been nasty.

On February 9, 2018, Domino Recording Company will release the next album from the Glasgow-based Scottish band. It is being called Always Ascending. this new album already has a single out in rotation to herald its arrival (listen below). The new single is “Always Ascending” and carries with it a different feel. But if anything can be assessed to Franz Ferdinand, it’s that they never rely on the previous album’s music to expand on. The new song has a STRONG dance appeal for the clubbing people. If it reminds of he past, it’s in the way tha bands of the lae ’70s and early ’80s processed their music to fit the dance floor.

Alex Kapranos has called the new album “simultaneously futuristic and naturalistic”. And I’d say that fits the new single quite well. Bu judge for yourself.

The new album is being released on CD, DD, and vinyl LP. The LP release will add in an 8-page booklet, a 24″ double-sided poster, and a download card. The LP will be presented in a single jacket

New First Aid Kit Album, Ruins, In Early 2018

When we last had anything new from First Aid Kit, it was in 2014 with Stay Gold. They released a 4-song EP (2 new songs, 2 sessions tracks of songs from Stay Gold) called America just shortly afterward as a Record Store Day exclusive. But as a great band will do, they effectively stretched the material from Stay Gold for quite a while. But quietly, they have been recording new compositions to store and choose for their next album. And now, their next album is coming.

On January 19, Columbia Records will release Ruins, the fourth album from the two-sister team of First Aid Kit. The new album will feature ten new songs (see list below). Currently, First Aid Kit has two songs from the album as singles. The first was the surprise announcement for Ruins, “It’s A Shame”, released last month. The newest single from the album, “Postcard” is appended to the announcement of the album’s release date along with its name and track-list.

Ruins will be made available as CD, DD, and, I’m sure, vinyl LP!

New Black Rebel Motorcycle Club Album, Wrong Creatures, Planned in 2018

I’m a BIG Black Rebel Motorcycle Club fan. Thus far, with seven grand albums out, they have yet to disappoint me. Do I have a favorite? Of course! That belongs to Howl (2005). Twelve years and four albums later, BRMC still knows how to do the right stuff! If you’re unfamiliar with Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, then I’d suggest hopping on to YouTube and getting a healthy dose of good Rock and Roll reminiscent of the old days and yet as fresh as tomorrow’s morning air.

Their last album, Specter At The Beach, issued in 2013, is a powerhouse of music with twelve excellent tunes that recall post-punk in an alternative style for today. In fact, B.R.M.C. would have thrived in the late ’70s had they been around for it. And we’d be talking about them in reverential tones. Nevertheless (I doth praise too much!)…

On January 12, 2018, BMG’s Vagrant label will release the new Black Rebel Motorcycle Club album, Wrong Creatures. With twelve new songs, Wrong Creatures is already expected to be as classic as their previous albums. I’ll most certainly be there for it. Their second single off the album, “Echo”, won’t be released until 2018. However, their first and second singles, (“Little Thing Gone Wild”, “Haunt”) can be heard below!

If you’re intrigued, I suggest checking them out. You have plenty of time!

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club is currently engaged on a support tour for Wrong Creatures with over 50 worldwide dates! There’s a First Avenue show  in Minneapolis that I just might be at (February 11)! They play Chicago at the Vic Theatre the night before. Tour dates here!

1985 Marillion Classic, Misplaced Childhood, Re-released As Album Only 2017 Remaster

Back in July, Parlophone and Rhino presented a Super Deluxe Edition of Misplaced Childhood, the 1985 Marillion classic. That release (read here) contained a lot for fans including a Steven Wilson 5.1 Surround mix. But as time passes, and these sets slow down in sales (or sell out), then the labels return to allow for a break out of the original album to be reissued. If that’s what you have waited for, then here it is.

On December 1, the 2017 remaster of Misplaced Childhood will be re-released on CD, DD, and vinyl LP as just the 10-track original album. Put it on your calendar. A pickup of this CD issue could also serve as a playable copy to preserve the boxed one that you’re trying to maintain.

Tom Waits Classic, Real Gone, Remastered and Remixed For CD and LP…And 4 Asylum LP Reissues

Tom Waits, although a notable name among fans, is little known to the masses. And even if they’re aware of his name, most know little to nothing about his recorded legacy. But then again, the unique voice of Tom Waits is certainly not for every music taste. That’s why the news of a Tom Waits reissue is largely ignored by most sites. But not this one.

Tom Waits has a nice collection of studio classics. Beginning with Closing Time from 1973 to his last album, Bad As Me, released in 2011, Tom Waits has sixteen studio albums in his catalog.

On December 1, Anti Records, a subsidiary of Epitaph Records, will revisit their original issue of Real Gone. Real Gone was originally released in 2004. One of the more amazing thing about Real Gone is that it found a greater US audience than Waits had previously.  The album was a high seller.

For the new reissue of Real Gone, Anti will present a remastered and remixed edition which Tom Waits has had a hand in (along with  Kathleen Brennan, his long-time wife). This should be a real treat for fans!

Real Gone will be reissued on CD, DD, and vinyl 2LP

As a bonus notation, Rhino will be reissuing 180g-weight vinyl LP editions of Tom Waits’ first four Asylum albums (Closing Time – 1973, The Heart of Saturday Night – 1974, Nighthawks At The Diner (Live) – 1975, Small Change – 1976). These are scheduled by Rhino for reissue on December 21.

New Scorpions Collection – Born To Touch Your Feelings -Best of Rock Ballads –

Surely you know who Scorpions are. The hard rock band hails from Germany, made their start back 1965(!), and continue to this day as a powerhouse of a band. Over time, this band (with several personnel incarnations including a wealth of drummers and guitarists (Michael Schenker once played for Scorpions)) have released eighteen studio albums, six live albums, and over ten compilation sets. The band can boast original member Rudolf Schenker, and long-time singer, Klaus Meine (since 1969), and long-time guitarist, Matthias Jab (since 1978). That’s impressive in any book, actually. Their last album was Return To Forever (2015), and their next to last, Sting In the Tail (2010) sold a million or more copies in an age where that is pretty impossible.

On November 24, SMG Records and Legacy Recordings will release a collection of ballads from Scorpions, 17 tracks in all. Selected from their extensive catalog, this set also includes various newer versions, some quite new (2017). Plus, there are two new songs(“Melrose Avenue”, “Always Be With You”). The new collection will offer a few edits, and a new acoustic version of “Send Me An Angel” (original track from 1990 Crazy World album). It will be called Born to Touch Your Feelings – Best Of Rock Ballads.

Upcoming 3CD/4LP/1BD-Audio 40th Anniversary Edition of Rush Classic, A Farewell To King

Rush has had no lack of fans over the course of their long-running tenure. With nary a change in personnel, or a disruption in creativity, Rush has maintained a solid fanbase. During their heights, they sold several million copies of 2112, and four million units of Moving Pictures. Rush sold platinum through 1991 with Roll The Bones. Even afterwards, during a period of drastic change and interest, Rush never sold below Gold status, their last being Clockwork Angels from 2012. But it was officially A Farewell To Kings that gave them the legitimate push into Top40 radio with the release and acceptance of “Closer To The Heart”.

On December 1, the band celebrates the 40th anniversary of A Farewell To Kings with a massive and lavish edition of a Super Deluxe Edition Box of the classic album.

The SDE Box will provide 3CDs (original album with 2015 remaster, and a complete show from the Dec , a high resolution 5.1 Surround and a Stereo set of mixes by Steven Wilson on a BD-Audio disc (and three videos), 4LPs of high quality 180g-weight vinyl (and an included DD rights card). The beautifully redesigned cover on the box and more bonuses inside include a unique Kings Ring held within a custom velvet pouch, a richly designed book with photos, a massive essay, notes, credits, memorabilia, two newly designed lithographs, three baseball cards, a 12″ turntable mat, and a replica A Farewell To Kings tour program.

But if all of that definiteness is too rich for you because you’re not THAT great a fan, or you simply refuse to spend that kind of money, then here are several other configurations of this new set.

There will be a three CD set that will contain the same content found on the 3CDs within the SDE. There is also a separately available 4LP set. And as usual, there is DD availability.

Wilco Revisits Being There (1996) With A Remastered 5CD and 4LP Deluxe Editions

The Chicago-based band known as Wilco played a country-flavored alternative music that was immensely popular back in the ’90s. With members from another like band, Uncle Tupelo, Wilco began the climb to Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, the album that put the band over the top. 5CD Boxed Set Of Post Punk Genius: To The Outside Of Everything – A Story of UK Post Punk 1977-1981

During the late ’70s and pushing into the early ’80s, what was known as the much loved Post-Punk genre helped to celebrate the independent music that was then flooding the market. There was so much great discover-able music that it’s remembered apart from many genres for its diversity of style and classic elements. (In many ways, the music of today is reminiscent of that grand period.)

On December 1, the great UK label, Cherry Red will release a 5CD collection of the period’s best known bands from the UK as well as a nice selection of lesser known UK bands of the time. What will make this set a fascinating one is the chance to not only have a great cross-selection of representative hits of that time frame, but it also provides a chance to discover some bands from that period that you may not have heard about (remember, there was no internet back then to alert us). There are certainly bands here that I’m completely unaware of but WILL be checking out!

Peruse the track-list of the new box set from Cherry Red, to be released as To The Outside Of Everything – A Story of UK Post Punk 1977-1981. You’ll find it to be a rich treasure of songs from a time of the past. (The title is drawn from Magazine’s “Shot By Both Sides” hit. (LOVE Magazine!). The phrase says “…shot by both sides, on the run to the outside of everything…”

The 5CD Box will pack in a richly-filled 48-page book with an essay and a band-by-band set of biographies. Plus plenty of photos, and lots of credits!
